Frog or toad???
« on: June 19, 2010, 08:38:40 PM »
This guy has been hiding in our skimmer for a few weeks now.  He doesn't move when my husband lifts the lid off to clean the filter either.  He seems to be fine - serenades us every night, quite loudly too.

Is he a frog or toad?  I'm leaning towards toad with all those bumps?!?
And which one is he?

not an expert, I'm better with frogs......could be an American Toad......females are larger then males.....if you pick up a male toad it will normaly give a croak for warning, females do not make sounds also a males throat is normaly darker.

Is this knowledge of mine is correct?
Frogs live always in contact with water and toads just during laying their eggs come in and out and then they go away and when they cannot find a way to leave the water body and have to stay in water they get drown and die.

I had the second type and after having several deads I made some easy exit for them from the pond.
They come just 2-3 days before they lay their eggs and after the eggs laid they are lost.

I would also like to learn the difference because here among people we all name them as "frogs".

Tugrul, not all frogs stay in contact with water. Tree frogs, Chorus frogs, and Peepers are like toads and only go around water to breed/lay eggs. Frogs have smooth skin, toads have rough skin.

That is an American toad, Lynne. You don't have to worry about the Cane toads, yet. ;D
Happy ponding,

YES!!!  It's an Eastern American Toad!  I looked it up after you said American Toad, and then listened to the call - it's exactly what we hear beginning early evening and going late into the night!

Thanks Marla!

Whereas the frogs in the water don't sing like the toad does when he is encouraging a mate to come find him. When we have several in the front pond and several on the pool cover in the back yard, it gets very noisey around here at night. They don't usually sing all night though but sometimes do sing in the daytime. Their throats balloon when they sing. Toads don't seem so afraid of people whereas the frogs we have are more apt to jump in the water to escape. I did have one though that got used to me and I could feed him.
