Try wadding up newspaper and stuffing a bunch in it and closing the lid. I did this with an old steamer trunk once and it did the trick. Also sitting it opened in the sun should help.

I know it sounds silly, but i've heard dried (unused) coffeegrounds removes odors.  Don't know why i know that... must've been in an e-mail my mother forwarded to me.   I think the last one i received was for all the things you can do with WD-40  :D

If you use water, depending on how old the trunk is it could warp, if you sand the top layer of the trunk to get that layer gone, it may get rid of the smell but will take away from the age of the wood, but I would imagine if you take a cloth and a mild bleach solution the same consistency of taking a warm towel to the face it may do the trick, just dont saturate the wood.  Hope this helps.  But if it dont work I would second the baking soda dry smeared on the wood for a week or so.

Try the dryer sheet thing too. Supposed to soak up odors.

Do you have one of those ionizers?

Put that in there on sanitize for overnite. I would leave lid cracked a bit though. Be sure you start out with clean "plates" clean the plates with amonia. Maybe you know somebody that would loan you their unit over night.

I have heard the same thing. Coffee grounds. I probably read that in the Kovel's antique & collectible newsletter. They have all kinds of tips and tricks for caring for all your old things.

A moving company told us about putting fresh coffee grounds in a "hose" in a closed up refrigerator.  It is suppose to work.

One summer an employee left a case of oranges in the cooler at school all summer... >:(-...stinky stinky stinky.  I couldn't get rid of the smell...until...one of the ladies accidently broke a bottle of pepper sauce (the little green peppers with vinegar) and like magic...no more smell.
Vinegar might do the trick  ;D

One more thing- I just saw a TV commercial for something called "Damp Rid", it's supposed to absorb moisture. Maybe that would help to get rid of the dampness and help with the smell.
