I have a Pileated Woodpecker that visits a few times during the summer. I think they are facinating, and so big.

We have Pileated Woodpeckers around here also. Such a beautiful bird. Quite often you can hear them striking the trees from a long way off. They have a distinctive call too. Hopefully your Dogwood will survive.

Very nice looking woodpecker. Wish we had them here in the flatlands..... My understanding is that if they are pecking holes into trees then they believe there are beetles or grubs beneath the bark...

That's a pretty pic! We also have them, and we love watching and listening to them. It took us a long time to figure out who was making those strange noises though, they have an unusual call.

I love Pileated Woodpeckers. At my other home, there was a pair of them, who had a field day with logs i used as borders on a trail in part of my wooded area.
They are a joy to watch.
Enjoy! (even if he is looking for FOOD inside that tree!)

1500 gallon pond. Most residents are 11 yrs old. Most are Koi, with one 9 yr old bullhead catfish. Residents took a trip of one hr to their new home. We all moved to this home just over a yr ago. They love their new digs!

What a beautiful bird. When we lived in Va, we saw them all the time and even videotaped them. Haven't seen any here. We only get Downy woodpeckers and the Yellow-Bellied variety.
Great pic!

Gorgeous! I remember the first time I saw a Pileated... I was walking past a nearby high school campus and I saw about six of them all pecking at an old live oak tree. I couldn't believe how big they were! They are so big and absolutely fearless. They weren't at all afraid of me.

Really pretty...we have Pileated's here also although not quite as common as my last house. Unfortunately when they go after a tree its because it is loaded with pests and ive seen our woodpeckers dig a hoe in one of my oak trees that he could go completely in in about 4 hours.
We were lucky enough to be visited by a pair of Bald Eagles that were cruising through two days ago...
