Thanks Cath and Jen.

She was getting pretty old.
Had her since before marriage.
We've been suspicious for the last few months that she had some kind of cancer,
because during her annual checkup this fall, the vet said he was VERY suspicious she had cancer, said her stomach was all lumpy. But she didn't seem in pain. He was honest, at her age, not much he could do, except stress her out with more tests. Also, her heart was getting VERY bad. (she was a Maine Coon)
I told him, no more tests, it was in Mother Natures hands now.
Then about 2 weeks ago, she started loosing weight dramatically.
A few days ago, she started having trouble walking.
Then she disappeared for 2 days and I thought...uh-oh...she's gone off to die.
But then she showed up again yesterday morning. VERY bad.
Horrible upper respiratory infection, gurgling lungs, crawling. Skeletal. BAD smell.
I had a horrible stomach virus and was out of work Wednesday,
and I was VERY shakey yesterday (Thursday) but went to work anyhow cuz I had to.

Today was the day...she was beyond miserable. Crying to me, asking for help.
So I helped her before my heart broke beyond repair. :'(
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Very sorry, it hurts,  The nature of those pets is not a long life in human terms.  They give us so much pleasure. Sadly some pain too. :'(
We had to take our 16 yr old kitty to the vet for the same reasons.  It was crushing.

Joyce, I'm so sorry about your beautiful Kleo.

A similar thing is happening to my old cat- dramatic weight loss, increased appetite, trouble walking, lots of crying. I know the time is coming.

It's hard to do the right thing, but they don't deserve to suffer.

Thanks LeeAnne, Jerry, Croft, and Karen.

Kleo was 'about' 16.
I adopted her in 1990 at the local pound here.
They said she was a young cat, less than a year old.
The pound had just spayed her a week before I adopted her.
But nobody wanted her, because she was feral (been abandoned).
Very timid, and hissed whenever anyone came near her.
But I gave her lots of TLC and eventually tamed her.
Was a NY City 'Penthouse' Cat for years. 8)

Karen, you'll find the strength to do the right thing,
cuz it gets too unbearable to watch them suffer.

I had made an appointment earlier today for someone to come here tomorrow and put her to sleep at 2pm.
But when I got home today and saw how bad she had become, I took her down by myself.
Bill stayed home with Jamie.
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Joyce, my heart is breaking for you.  It's so hard to lose a friend that has been with you for so long.  They are always with us going through what we go through, silently watching but understanding somehow and comforting us by just being there.

Rest well little Kleo, and Joyce my thoughts and prayers are all around you.   :'(

Joyce,

So sorry you lost your friend.  Having a pet around for 16 years makes it really hard when they go.

I'm sure you know that Maine Coons are making a comeback in popularity the last few years.  At one time, they were the most popular cat breed in America, but fell in popularity when the Persian came into its own.   I have read that Maine Coons almost completely disappeared for a time.  Maine coons also "meow" differently that other cats, and can be really big cats.  My late mother-in law, Pauline,  had a really big orange one named "Redford" (after Robert Redford, but thats another story).  Redford died a couple of days before Pauline.

It's very sad and emotional to have to put down a beloved pet but it's comforting to know you are doing what's best for your cat.  You've always have the memories of her.  Take Care

what a terrible time of year to loose your beloved pet.  It has been almost 5 years now but I went through the same thing.  My beloved collie, Jake, quit eating and had rapid weight loss.  I tried everything including lots of blood tests etc...  I just couldn't bring myself to put him down till I had the test results back so I just kept praying that if it was his time he would go in his sleep.  Sure enough he passed away Christmas Morning 5 years ago.  Will never forget that Christmas, but at least he is not suffering anymore.  The test results came back the next morning.  Talk about perfect timing.  hugs o(:-) o(:-)
