More odds and ends....mostly odds...
« on: September 06, 2010, 02:51:36 PM »
Annette beat me to the bloom….  This is sea squill, a drought tolerant native to Mediterranean coast.   The bulbs are huge, cantaloupe size.  Annette: I told you that the divided squill had not sent up stalks this year but I now notice that two of the three bulbs I divided last year are just now beginning to send up stalks and one can be seen in the background.

California native growing out in the parkway with the other drought tolerant plants.

Mexican Hat (Ratibidia columnifera var. pulcherimma), another drought tolerant plant in the parkway.  This plant has a very long tap root and gets no water other than rain……and it hasn’t rained since April…..

Clematis (‘Crystal Fountain’)  The photo below it is the same flower…only older…

The yellow flower spike is Justicia aurea

Not oranges…….

This is the plant that dragon fruit or pitaya fruit grows on (Hycocereus undatus).  I’m uncertain of the variety since this came from cuttings someone gave me.  When I drive through Vietnamese communities I often see these plants growing up over a wall or fence.

Ginger, Hedychium ‘Beni-Oran’.  Very fragrant

Ginger, Hedychium coronarium.  This is my most fragrant ginger.  Love the smell….

Shell Plumeria

Candy Stripe Plumeria

Alstroemeria.  Normally this would have finished blooming long ago but we had unusually cool weather during the months of July and August.

Mandevilla “Giant Crimson”

Salvia guaranitica 'black and blue'.  The hummers love this salvia

Another desert native and drought tolerant plant, Baja Fairy Duster (Calliandra californica)

:worship: Your Clematis and plumeria are still growing/flowering!?!  That is awesome!

Your giant white squill looks gorgeous!  Good to know that the newly divided bulbs are flowering right away.  My flowers are all dried up now and if I get my bebot out there I need to dig up my bulbs and relocate them.

All the plants you grow in your garden are so special and different.  My black and blue salvia never came back the first year I planted them.  Guess they were not so drought tolerant.

This salvia is planted on the north side of the house.  They seem to like partial shade.  I also have one out in the parkway and it is barely hanging on even though it does get some water from my drip system.

After this cluster of squill finishes flowering I think I will divide them as well.  I can see at least four large bulbs in this group.

Our cool summer really extended the flowering time of some of the plants such as clematis.  Think we can get two cool summers in a row?  Sure hope so....

Mikey, I love looking at your unusual plants:  you and Annette and Jerry make me jealous with the beauties you can grow.  And I love the squill, (I like saying that word... :D)  The Mexican Hat resembles gilardia here, only more coneflowerish--is that a word?   ::)

A question for you since I'm technically challenged, but how do you post all those photos in one thread?  It will only let me post 4.

It is now   lol

I upload my photos to Photobucket (free) and then download to here.  I seldom use APs uploading feature so I assume it is set to allow only four photos

Perhaps you have some Cuban blood in you...  Ricky Ricardo (I love Lucy) was always making up new words.  Some dear friends are also Cuban and they are constantly coming up with new words and phrases.  Their names are Al & Becky and we call their twisting of English phrases as Al&Becky-Isms.  Here are just a couple that come to mind:

"Now don't pussyfoot around the bush."   (Becky - Beat around….)
"It was like shooting monkeys in a barrel."   (Al - shooting fish…)

lol  thanks Mikey for my chuckle for the day!  One of my favorite made-up words is 'slickery'--a cross between slick and slippery.  When you use it, everyone knows what you mean...at least I would.... ;D

Oh I really like that word LuAnn and it brought to mind a second definition.....

"Slickery"= Adjective meaning to be slick, to use trickery, to be hard to catch, deceitful
Sentence= That politician sure is slickery.
