Annette beat me to the bloom…. This is sea squill, a drought tolerant native to Mediterranean coast. The bulbs are huge, cantaloupe size. Annette: I told you that the divided squill had not sent up stalks this year but I now notice that two of the three bulbs I divided last year are just now beginning to send up stalks and one can be seen in the background.

Mexican Hat (Ratibidia columnifera var. pulcherimma), another drought tolerant plant in the parkway. This plant has a very long tap root and gets no water other than rain……and it hasn’t rained since April…..

This is the plant that dragon fruit or pitaya fruit grows on (Hycocereus undatus). I’m uncertain of the variety since this came from cuttings someone gave me. When I drive through Vietnamese communities I often see these plants growing up over a wall or fence.
