On another thread, you mentioned acquiring an internet worm that resulted in your having to wipe and clean and reinstall.  Could you share with us exactly how you became infected with this worm?  If an informed technician as yourself, can be victimized , the rest of us need to be careful, and its easier to be careful if you know how...

Hi John,

I am not 100% sure how the worm got on my computer, probably something I opened without thinking. These things are disguised as so many things these days and it is very easy to open something without thinking from a trusted source.

Once I had the worm I knew I was infected because McAfee found it right away. Rather than delete it right away, I went to quaranteen the file so I could investigate it further and hit continue what I am doing by accident. What happened then is the file populated throughout my registry and otehr files making changes all over the place. Every time I would find and delete part of it, it would migrate elsewhere changing and deleting files as it spread.

Eventually it changed some windows system files that are important to booting up the computer at all. I was unable to copy the files back because I could not install the drivers for my CD Rom. I was lucky however that I had two physical hard drives and one that was partitioned. I loaded a fresh copy of Windows 98 or some old version I had on hand onto the slave drive and was able to access both drives but not able to fix the old copy of Windows XP.

With the backup Windows 98 operating system now working, I was able to copy all of the files from the infected drive over to the second drive. Once I had everything I needed moved over I was able to format the master drive and reinstall Windows XP from scratch. It took a couple weeks to get all of my settings back to the way I like them but it is working fine now and is much cleaner and running better than ever.

Make sure you do not open files you are unsure of. I believe the one I opened was from a link on a website somewhere.
Keep your antivirus software up to date at all times and follow the steps concisely when your antivirus software finds a problem. It will save you so much time in the end.
