Rebuilding pond
« on: December 01, 2010, 07:50:58 AM »
Early this summer we finally decided to rebuild my bigger pond. It had needed a rebuild for a couple of years. We tore the old one down and rented a skid loader to start on the rebuild, when the skid loader broke down. We could not get another one for several months due to the cost factor at other rental places. I finally got one of my own 2 months ago and work began. It is still a ways from getting done but here it is so far. My youngest son is doing the work. He started on the lower part of the pond, so this is the lower half.

Here are pics of the old pond while we were tearing it down. The last pic is another more recent pic in the construction of the new pond.

The new ponds will be around 24" - 30" deep, with a shelf around the sides that will be about 12" - 16"  deep. The lower part still needs to be finished, but because lights are being put into the stone and wires therefore need to be run, the upper pond had to be started. Block laying has been started for it and a concrete foundation has been poured for a special feature. I will tell you about it later, but not yet.  {:-P;; Two days of rain has left everything really muddy for now.

Nothing like doing a construction project, especially one involving water, in the middle of winter.    :)

Haha!.. That is what I thought, too, Julles. But we are in zone 6 so we still have some decent days. Has been cold yesterday and today.

Great looking pond!  So much work goes into a well designed pond.  You've obviously have been working very hard.  Love the stonework!  Can't wait for Spring to see all your fabulous lilies and lotus!

;D  Wow!! That looks terrific! Can't wait to see it finished and that 'special feature"! The stone work is amazing, Great job!
Our new pond at my Mom's has to be put on hold for now. It's very cold here in Michigan. The fish are moved in though and doing fine so far.

Okay, this is a pond being built, but it is a fish and plant pond, not an ice skating pond. Come on winter, give us a break! 6 inches of snow starting last week-end and temps so cold that the snow and ice hasn't melted!  {:-P;; Spring, we are waiting for you.

The extremely cold weather, the snow and the ice has all caused work to go slow on the new pond. Some progress has been made, however. Here is a pic of the lower pond taken today.

Very nice! How far below water level is the stacked stone on the inside of the pond? Do you have a photo just before water was added?

I will have to look tomorrow to see how deep the stones actually go. They are from the shelf in the ponds up to the top cap but not sure how much is actually in the water, but I think it is about 12". You can see them in this pic where you can see the shelf as well, but there is water in the pond also. There are also hiding places inside the stone work so the fish can hide from predators if need be. Of course, that would be enough room for a large goldfish or a small koi.  ;D

Hi. With so much cold weather, and now lots of rain, the work ahs slowed down alot. Hopefully, we will be able to get back on it in a week or so. It is 24" deep.

The pond itself is just about finished. I need to add the plants is about all. Behind the lower pond the sidewalk foundation has been poured and the stone has been started on it. The bog pond has also been layed out, which will be on the other side of the sidewalk. At the back of the upper pond will be the patio. The sidewalk leads up to it. Here are pics from the last two weeks.
