What to do with those cute little toads
« on: June 07, 2011, 12:40:43 PM »
weve been visited lately by a pair of toads- Im not an expert, but my best guess is its mating season and ones a girl and the other a boy. I love the cheeeeing sound they make when they call to each other- on the other hand, my husband cant stand it. he gave me an altimatum   {nono}either the toads go, or he burys the pond- if anyone out there knows what I can do about my little problem, I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions- HELP SAVE HANNAHS POND!

Ear plugs for the hubby!
Seriously they will stop all the chatter after a week or two and will all disappear except for the tad poles they leave behind. Once they morf they will also leave or get yourself a butterfly net and try to catch them. Good luck with that.

Um, our toads are making noise from dusk to dawn, essentially all summer. We have what seems like thousands of tadpoles...it's the toad kingdom!

We used to catch the toads with the sort of net used to land game fish.   The we would haul them to pond outside town.    After a few years we learned to live with them.  Ours seem rather random about when they make noise.

O.k. so they are toads-which means they don't Have to live at your pond---as they don't really require water....so if you still want to enjoy the sounds of their matting calls and provide them with some where to lay eggs-- but, not soo loudly-comprimise....get a small shallow kiddie pool--sit it away from the house and relocate them to the kiddie pool....its easiest to catch them at night with a flash light and net...

I love the sound of the Frogs and Toads!! I had one neighbor complain - but he cant do a thing about the ''Wild" ones in my yard- they come from the creek down the street!!
I am on the second batch of tadpoles, these are very tiny so I am thinking they are Frogs - the last ones were Big so probably Toads.

If they really bother him hand him a net so he can rehome them to a creek!!

Relocation is an option, but other toads will take their place. Eventually, you will likely also develop a population of frogs, which can be louder than toads (depending of species). They are a natural part of a pond's environment.

My hubby does not have a choice I am not giving up my ponds. Here the big tadpoles are bullfrogs and they take 2 seasons to turn into frogs. The little black ones are toads. I also have tree frog tadpoles.

So what decision have you made?  My husband dug my pond for me as a birthday present many years ago.  But it's not like we didn't know what would happen when we dug a hole in the ground and put water in it.  Wildlife migrates to water.  Ultimatums rarely work, hopefully hubby will decide to live with the nature it attracts.   :)

Exactly. Dig a hole and fill it with water and of course nature will send all kinds of creatures to it.

It's neat to hear the toads and know I've helped nature a tiny bit by giving it a place to make toads. This year we have frog tadpoles for the first time in 10 years. Oh and also have baby fish in one of the half barrel pots. Don't know yet if they are goldfish or Koi or a mix. With my luck, they are goldfish.
