2 projects, One worked, the other , not so hot!
« on: June 26, 2011, 10:32:22 AM »
My spillway has always been a problem. It gets full sun and the Algae builds up fast
I have covered it before with boards etc, but not a lot of success.  This baby will works. It all fits. I even measured it right!  It needs a bit of tweaking and positioning plnts to disguise it.
I cleaned the priming pot and the falls are now full force. I will put some bamboo on the sides too. It will then be in total shade!
I did all this limping! How's that for an excuse?

The other was my facetious garden sign. Too big to poorly made.  I will redo it eventually.
I was to cheap to buy heavy enough plywood. Big mistake! Now I get to do it twice.  I may be getting a message here!

Yes, I am creative and have design sense, but carpentry skills fail me. As does measuring skills!

Love the sign. A cousin is having one made up for Rich and I that says 'You're entering The Garden of Eaton'....because our last name is Eaton....you know...Garden of Eden (Eaton). I thought that was quite clever of her to think of that.
Our daughter just graduated with a degree in landscape design. She works for a landscape design company but does small designs on the side. She named her business "Garden of Eaton Designs'

Gotta give it to ya, Jerry!  You are creative and talented!  VERY nice sign!!!  The spillway cover is a good idea too.  Your plants should cover the space in no time.

Livetogarden, nice play on names!

If you have more of the plywood left just screw and glue another layer to the back.

To the back of what?
It's after 2:00 now and there is still no sun on the spillway. I assume what algae it there will die?

Annette: as a former sign man  I will do it over. A lot smaller, and I will stick to my hand lettering, the computer stuff is to stiff.

I'm loving them both, they look great as is:  but from one perfectionist to another, you always think you can do it better!     ::)

Thanks LuAnn, no perfectionist here, but The thing is way to big I used  comuter lettering.
I painted signs for many years and I know it will look a lot better.  When I get it done i will post them side by side.

When I saw the first pic, I thought you were going to disguise the spillway as a diving board! I think the plant shelf was probably a better choice. Fits better with the theme. . .

Looks like your idea should work, but algae can survive with only 10-20% of the normally available light. If it doesn't work out, then maybe consider going with a wood "flume," made of cypress. Let the algea grow and simply consider it as an adjunct part of the filter system, (like the green fur algae that should never be scrubbed from the sides of a pond.)

But, as you say, so far, so good!

Other than a tendency towards DIY projects, I'd say that "measuring skills" are something else we have in common. Wood working projects in the past became much easier when I tapped into my old boat building supplies where I had epoxy by the gallon and saved "wood flower" by the bag.

But hey, you got water from point A to point B. A sucess, in my book!
