They can spend hours doing that. I will observe mine starting to dig in the morning, and sometimes they are still laying come evening.
I am also convinced that sometimes they dig "dummy" nests in which they lay no eggs, to trick predators and keep them away from the real nests with eggs. Also, sometimes they dig and decide they don't like the spot, and move to another location.
