One beautiful lily..
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:09:37 PM »
As yellows go, I think this is a beautiful lily. Lemon Mist. This is her first bud. Seems I've been waiting forever for this bloom! Well worth the wait though....I hear they are great bloomers too. She has 2 more buds at this point, so we will see....this bud is about 4.5" across.

My favorite yellow o(:-), I can attest to the multiple blooms, two days ago I had four at one time.

Hi greenthumbnails, YES! I was so shocked to bend down and smell it! It does smell like lemons, or at the very least, a citrus smell...not sure it's exactly lemon, but definitely citrus. I keep forgetting to mention the fragrances of the lilies when I talk about them. The Trickett smells like a cross between clean laundry and a light berry scent. I chose the lilies that said 'highly fragrant' and the ones that said they bloom well, and stand well above the water. The 4th lily I have has not bloomed at all, Dallas. It has a tiny bud on it right now, but it's the only one I have yet to see.

Thanks Jessica. I have a question for you. (or anyone else with a lemon mist)This is the first hardy that I have had, that the bloom actually spiraled/coiled back under the water on the 4th day. Most of the other ones just seem to lay over, and not get coiled back under the water. Is this normal for the lemon mist? It's kind of cool, and I have read that it's suppose to happen when they have been pollinated, but there are no bees or other things inside my patio that would have pollinated it...

Usually, I cut the spent blooms off as soon as I know they are done, usually on the beginning of the 4th day, if they are laying over, and have not opened by noon, so maybe I cut them off before they had a chance to coil?

Very pretty.

My 99c PetSmart yellow finally bloomed this year - and it's almost white!

Do lilies fade in color over time?

Nice Bloom!

I have three different yellows and haven't a clue what any of them are.

As best I remember all my lily blooms will spiral over if I don't get them pinched the first day they do not open.

Yes Lynne, Lemon mist does coil and retract under water after the blooms are spent but then I have quite a few varities that do the same.

More than likely, all of the blooms that coil have been pollenated. If not by insects, then they've self-pollenated. The flower's own pollen can do it, rather than from another flower.  That's one of the things to guard against when making a hybrid.

So, what would happen if I left it Mike? If I didn't cut it off, that is.

If you slip a small plastic bag over it and use a bread tie to close it, you then would wait for it to swell and then burst. Then you remove it and collect the seeds, plant them and find out if they are viable. You would likely find that plants that grow from this have more diversity in them than you might expect.

There is a lot of very good info on this in the growing hybrids section of the Forum.

Posting from a mobile phone is rather taxing, compared to doing it from the old desktop!

All my hardy blooms coil too. I just leave them, most of any seedlings that do develop do not survive in my stock tanks.

Julles- As far as I know, most of the water lily blooms tropical and hardy tend to fade in color by the 3rd or 4th day.  At least that is what I've noticed with my blooms.
My next female cat will be called "Whata Lily"!
