A couple of epi's
« on: July 19, 2011, 03:35:02 PM »
that Annette sent me cuttings of a couple of years ago.  I repotted them when my young cat found it fun to chew on the ends of them.  I put them outside in the warmth and humidity and will bring them in in the fall.  I will hang them where she can't reach them:  I can't wait to see bloom buds on them!

Thanks Annette!

They look great.  If I recall correctly it took my epi cuttings three years to bloom

Wow!  They look great and have grown by leaps and bounds.  I can say I want photos of your blooms next spring if not this fall (rare, but it does happen).  It's nice to see how the babies have grown!  Thanks for sharing!  Their parents are still blooming now which tells you how cool and mild the weather has been here.

Thanks Mikey and Annette.  Maybe when it cools off here, they will be ready to set some blooms.  I will definitely get pics of that--it can't happen soon enough for me!  I LOVE these plants!  And I need to get pics of my airplants Mikey, they are doing well also!

Kuan, I am by no means an expert on this, but the Christmas Cactus is called Schlumbergera and the epi's I showed are epiphyllums.  They are both epiphytes like orchids in the sense they don't really grow in the ground but in cracks and crevices and forks of trees where debris such as leaves and bark collect.  The water washes over and through the roots and planting medium but doesn't stay wet for long or the roots would rot.

I believe they are related, but they are not the same plant.  Anybody care to elaborate?   :)

LuAnn, thank you so much for the detailed explanation.  O0 They look alike so I thought they were one and the same.
