Snack
« on: August 17, 2011, 12:35:34 PM »
A few days ago I was standing in our living room watching an Orb spider rebuilding its web outside just a few feet away.  Orb spiders build those beautiful circular webs that act as a net to capture flying insects during the evening.  Normally they start spinning their webs at dusk but this guy started at about 6pm when the sun was still up and it wouldn't start getting dark for a couple more hours.  I had been watching this orb spider for several weeks and it had grown pretty big during that time.

I was entranced with its web building project while watching it bounce up and down in the springy web.  I was startled when a Mocking bird suddenly swooped down, snatched the spider and disappeared out of view......

Good bird. Spiders are not my favorite. I can feel the hairs on my arms standing up just hearing your story.

Did your lynx spider come back this year?  The one I had when I lived in Cypress came back (or one of her offspring did) every year and made her nest in my tree rose next to the driveway.  I loved that spider - she was so beautiful and such a good mommy!

I didn't see any Lynx spiders in the front yard this year Lynda.  My back yard is a disaster due to neglect so it is possible some are back there that I have not seen.  I have only gone into the back yard this year to pick fruit and avocados.

Esther: Although not a fan per se of spiders I do enjoy them.....from a distance.....  The Orb spiders learn quickly where not to build their webs.  Should they pick a location where there is foot traffic I have noticed that once it is destroyed they then choose different anchor points in the same area to build the web and continue doing so until they find a location that doesn't get in the way.

Orb spiders have been sparse in my yard thia year.  Could it be the cool weather we've been experiencing?

There is one orb that kept on building its web right in my path to the pond.  The web is strong and somewhat sticky.  Ewww!  It was probably testing this stupid human to see how many times it takes for me to walk through its web before I learn to hold a waving stick.  I think I was tested for a good solid week!
