Warm Thoughts
« on: January 13, 2007, 10:51:09 AM »
This round of winter hasn't reached us...yet, so I thought you might enjoy a few pictures.  Whites and an icy blue somehow seemed most apropos.<g>

I would Gary, but this is a 'G' rated forum so I don't think the mods will let me.  That and the grandkids just pulled in so I have to put the camera away and entertain a couple rug rats.<g>

Put the rugrats away - and thank you for the odd freeze advice.

Now - I love white tropicals - what would you suggest for So. Cal. - Normally zone 10, this year zone 6.

(It is heartbreaking to see all the gardeners who have been pushing the envelope for decades lose everything in a night or two)

Cheers,

Mike

The kids are gone and quiet again reigns supreme.<g>

Mike....I'm funny about white trops, I don't like them with mottled pads and I dislike like it if they 'pink up' over the course of the bloom; so I had have to suggest  one of Charles Winch's white hybrids.  Both White Delight and White Fleck are fairly easy to come by ( thought WD has buttery yellow overtones).  The best I believe is the one he named after himself, N. 'Charles Winch'.  Unfortunately, it is impossible to find unless you know the right people....and you know the right people.<g>

A few more pics for those of you weathering the icy conditions.

The lilies are gorgeous and the critter is cute . . . . think I need to move much further south cuz it's so bloody cold here . . . . . and dreary too.  At least I can look at your pics and feel better about the prospect of this ending . . . . summer is coming . . . .

hi craig, gosh, those are very nice. so good to see them this time of the year. our weather is crazy, it was in the hight 60's 2 weeks ago and now as we speak, <well, i am the one talking> its a whole 4 degrees above zero.

hate this stuff, however, i was just down the cold basement and the new hybrids are doing nicely sending up pads that are about 3 inches long.

keep the photos coming.

Craig,
Love the pics. You know of anywhere I could get a N. 'Charlie's Pride'in the trade? I saw it in New Orleans, La. last year and was in awe of the vivid color.  o(:-)
I have never seen one for sale anywhere. Is it one of the ones you only have access to at this point?  I have found some places in the past where I have seen Winch cultivars listed I would not necessarily trust.
I live in Houson, Tx. so I believe that it would do as well here as it did in Louisiana.

Hi Tim,

'Charlie's Pride' is a tough one.  The only one I know for sure that has it is Enzo and he got it from a supplier in NJ named Waterford Gardens.  Since theirs came from me a few years back, I can vouch that they are the true CP.

I hope someday Mr. Winch's cultivars enter the hobby, but at this time there really aren't many available.  Between the new waterlily competition and the display in New Orleans, I am priviledged to have maybe thirty of his hybrids but I also promised Mr. Winch's daughters I wouldn't let any out of my possession until their father decides, which if, any he wants to find their way into hobby.

All very pretty but not the snake to me. First time one comes out or goes in our pond it's a gonner the pond not the snake... well both hopefully. In five years we haven't had but one very tiny garden snake.

I really love those!  I'm especially fond of wishful thinking . . . . such a pretty little thing and the color!!!  Is it small enough for my daughter's pondlet?  (I only get enough sun for flowers on the patio . . . .)

Hi Teresa,

Really too soon to tell how that lily will turn out.  That is the first bloom and with the  cold coming I didn't want to lose the bud so kinda, sorta forced it to bloom.<g>

Mr. Lou....good to hear from you.  That one is definitely on my "watch " list.<g>
