Barbara Streisand said, I wish Whitney Houston could have loved her talent as much as we did. RIP Whitney. What a fabulous voice!

it's sad, for sure, but when you choose the lifestyle she did, it's inevitable. so many of us wish we had an ounce of her talent, and to see her self-destruct over the years leaves a lasting impression. someone told me, "we should remember all the good she did" but it's hard to ignore all the bad, as well, which was the latter part of her life.

Mascot, is that the way you remember Elvis, Jimi Hendriz, Janice Jopplin, Jim Morrison and on and on? After awhile you remember the music and talent.

Hey, don't give me crap for being honest.
People who choose to use drugs like that typically end up the same way.
There is far worse being said about her than what I posted, so give it a rest.

Why do I need to rest?  I posted my opinion about her and you asked about other singers, not sure why.
Like Streisand said: too bad she didn't "love her talent as much as we did". That sounds a lot to me like a
kinder way of saying what I did, do you wonder how Streisand felt about Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Elvis?

Like I said nothing was meant. I was just asking a question in response to yours. I might have asked Streisand if she had said it while responding to one of my posts on American Ponders Chit chat section. All I meant was the self destruction aspect will fade but her voice and talent will always be there. Rest was in response to you telling me too.

Not to denigrate the dead or anything, but I was never fond of Whitney Houston's singing style.  And especially not Barbara Striesand - they both have more of what I call a "bellowing" style rather than singing.  In fact, Barbara was one of the key singers who moved us from "singing" to the style we have had prevelant for many years now, which to me is more shouting rather than melodic.

Anyway, I know Whitney is revered for her version of "I Will Always Love You."  But that song was written by Dolly Parton, and Dolly performs it soooo much better.  Whitney give the song lung power, but Dolly sings it with true heart-rending emotion.  But Whitney claimed it as "hers."  I remember seeing an interview with her, and she claimed the song was "hers," and simply dismissed the fact that another talanted performer had written it.  What an ego.

I didn't know Dolly wrote that. Wonder what she thinks when she hears all the hullabaloo about it and Whitney.

I don't pay much attention to celebrities as I have little interest in what they do/say but I did hear that Whitney's mother or family wanted a private funeral service for her, as opposed to some huge stadium event, and that spoke well of them in my opinion.  We all have character flaws of various degrees but if I'm caught picking my nose I can be rest assured it will not be the cover photo on some magazine........not that I pick my nose of course  {:-P;;

I remember when Whitney was going to sing Dolly's song, she didn't want to hear Dolly's version.

I think watching bits and pieces of her and Bobby's reality show did it for me.  Sorry she is gone but she could really be ugly.

From the movie that made it famous

Tell me that won't tear at your heart.

And here's a more complete version, with the "I wish you...." part.
