How do you monitor water temperature?
« on: April 14, 2012, 10:59:52 AM »
I started looking at some wireless pool thermometers today for convenient readings of water temp. The reviews are all over the place. Do you have a favorite product?

Since my ponds are for waterlilies, I have no reason to constantly monitor water temps. I let the plants tell me when the water is warm enough to start the growing season or cold enough to bring it to a close.

Years ago, I was breeding & raising Koi. Water temperature was much more important to me. But of all the critical water parameters, water temperature is the slowest to show a significant change.

From a design standpoint, a dedicated Koi pond is a complex system. Every thing added to that system is also an additional potential failure point. Especially so when the addition is an automated one with its own internal complexities. This is why I've always been an advocate for design simplicity.

That said, I'd not argue against having a water temperature monitoring system, as it would be one who's failure would be the least likely to result in a catastrophic system collapse. But I would consider it to be a "nice-it," rather than a necessity.

Just some rambling thoughts brought on by your post.

Hi Mike, I agree with all you said. I only grow plants in my pond. What I'm curious about monitoring is overnight water temp. I ordered a Victoria this year and am anxious to get it put in! :) The hardies are way ahead of schedule this year - already blooming, tropicals growing like mad, and I even have some aerial lotus pads.

Having tried monitoring water temps throughout twenty four hour perionds for more than a season.  Found that the lowest temperatures were rarely at night.  Usually they occured at least an hour after sunrise same as our air temperatures here in MI.  I agree with MikeS about simplicity being best.  If I want to know I just check it once in the morn and again that night with a regular aquarium thermomiter now.  Most days the water temp in any medium to large pond does not vary that much on a daily basis.  Do not know if a small raised pond would have more variation daily though.

I just use a floating aquarium thermometer. In fact, I use a lot of aquarium things for my ponds. Like small submersible filters for the smaller container gardens. Work like a charm.
