What do you use to repot your lilies on?
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:37:45 PM »
I am just getting around to tending to my water lilies.  I was just curious what sort of set up you might have for doing this.  I usually pull one pot out at a time and work on it right by the pond. i make a mess and then clean it all up when done.  This year I got some portable saw horses and found a small wooden pallet to make a table top.  It is tall but might work.  i was looking for something portable but I am ready to do this this weekend so no time to order and get what I want in.  I just wanted ideas.

Thanks
Cindy

Having some kind of table to work on, does help save your back....I usually don't use one though.   I have a large garden cart that I usually set the pots in, and fill them there and use it to transport the lilies to the tank/pond.   Carrying the heavy pots is the hardest part for me.

Metal patio table, bucket of dirt goes on a chair, & a pan underneath to catch falling dirt.  Gets messy but I can put up the umbrella to get shade.  Will use my garden cart when I have to haul lilies from the other side of the house.  Otherwise it is a lot of walking back & forth.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

I use a flat cart. I bring new ones from the greenhous and remove the spent pots.  Wheel them to my potting bench and dump the soil there. It has to be rich!

Put a cheap plastic tablecloth on the table. Dirt will stay off the new paint.

I have a tow behind the lawn tractor wagon. I put an old pvc table in it.  Waste in the wagon then tote it off.

My driveway.  Lots of space, hard surface, easy to hose off, trash can is nearby.

I also love that it's in front of the house, that the clay soil smears all over the pavement, and that all this drives my neat-nick engineer Serbian-born neighbor NUTS!  He thinks the front of the house is the "gateway to the home" and, for some odd reason, gets some of HIS self esteem from how the front of MY house looks.  You'll never find so much as a fallen leaf on his driveway.  But me, I have a ton more going on in my life (like dividing and repotting water lilies, not to mention work and friends and volunteer stuff and just having fun), so my place tends to be a little less spic-and-span.  Lily pad left on the driveway?  LOVE IT!

Say, Cynthia, did you make it to Nelson's Garden Party?  I forgot to remind you beforehand.

No we did not get to go.  I am so far behind on my gardening that I was determined to finish the backyard last week. All is planted, mulched. I could barely move on Monday.

I don't need anything (supplies) right now. And so it is too long a drive just to go look.

Did you go?

I have a "pad" made of blocks that I use to dump them out on, hose them off, etc. Then I do the repotting on an old wooden table I have at the end of the house that I use for a general potting table.

Wow I got two lillies repotted and quit for today.  Actually I cleaned out the upper pond that used to be the bog. Changed out filter pads and scrubbed  the pot that is in the upper pond that serves as a fountain.  The two saw horses with a top on it is working out good for a work station.  I did see something on Amazon by Sunset that looks like it might work. It is a garden cart that has wheels. Tomorrow is another day.    :D :)

I use an old PVC table over the grass. Easy on my back and the grass loves the nutrients. I just set up near the pond and hose it off when I'm done.

You know what would work great?  One of those carts from Lowes garden center that has an upper and lower level for the plants. Just a thought.

Yes, Zoe, I went to the Garden Party.  The Pond Society had a booth, and we were trying to get new members and also tell people about the Tour on May 5 & 6.  We have TEN NEW ponds on the tour this year!!

I end up spending little time helping man the booth, becaue I love listening to the lectures all day long.  The one on pumps was surprisingly interesting - all about lift, head, gph, ampheres, etc.  Sounds dull and technical, but it was really interesting.

Spent too much $, though.   ;)

I got a rolling cart that is a metal mesh garden cart. It has a bottom and then a top shelf. Sort of like the metal black garden tables but green It is called a two tier garden push cart.  It is a early B=day gift from my family. I wil be able to use it for so much more than potting up lilies. So  excited  to get  out there.
