Any of you have Stenosis?
« on: May 12, 2012, 02:39:58 AM »
If so how do you alleviate the pain?
I am ok once out and about, but getting out of bed is very painful.  Advil helps a bit, but not much lately.
It was very effective.

Jerry;  Yes I have Stenosis and because of that I had to have L-4  and L-5 fused.   That was 5 years ago.  Operation went great but due to Stenosis I still have some back pain in the morning until I get moving.  What I did find helpful was changing over to a " Sleep Number "  matress and keeping the matress very firm around 95--100.    This made a world of difference for me.   I do not take any pain medication.   Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron:  I suspect there are different kinds of Stenosis.  We have had the same mattress for eons. I was always happy with it, but it is time for a change.  We will check it out.

My internist was against sugery to widen the canal the nerves run through , he said "You get around fine and the Surgery may not work and there is risk involved." Being put to sleep can kill you too!"

We sure will look into "Sleep Slumber"
Did a little research. Many use the word "Slumber" it can be confusing. Can you tell me who the manufacturer is?

Heard nothing but good things about the Sleep Number bed!!  Each person can regulate their own side of the bed for softness/hardness of the mattress.  I want one!!!   ;D

Pretty good claims and studies here.

My wife claims we needed a new bed years ago.  I was always happy.  Now there are some big incentives!
We will check it out Monday.

That Dr was a loon.  Has he not heard of second opinions?
Tomorrow I am getting a third opinion.  It is from a Surgeon. Yes. Surgeons perform surgery.

The guy you went to need to be reported!

Good news I think. Mine can be fixed with Laminectomy (SP)  overnight at Hospital.
10 weeks recovery, but can walk around , do desk work etc. NO gardening though. No bending.
Probably opt for September to have it done

Got the "Sleep Number" bed  very good. Only one night so far, but so far so good.

Thanks for the tip!

Before you have a laminectomy, try your new bed for a few weeks. We do several laminectomies per day in the Operating Room I work in. It's a fairly straight forward operation and doesn't take very long usually. In my three years in our OR, I have not seen anyone return for additional surgery from this type of procedure.
It is an open procedure and the procedure is not minimally invasive so if you can avoid the surgery with alternate therapies, you will be better off. Did you ever try a tens unit like I mentioned to you before. They work very well for me.

Cheers,
Sean

There were 2 types of surgery with very similar names.  I may have erred.
She said the procedure takes 1 hour to1.5 hours, overnight in hospital. then desk work and walking are fine, NO bending!  Therapy to follow. Recovery time 10 weeks.

I have a list of questions I failed to ask, one was the TENS machine.  Right now I am needing approval of my Cardio guy.  I had he 24 hour heart monitor and he said it is too slow!(44)  I take it myself and it's over 60
He tweaked a med and feels that will make it go back to normal.  Right now it is,but that is me doing the check.  I feel I am accurate. I see him in 2 days and see where we go. if he clears me I will try to set a date.
I checked, it is Lamenectomy

Heck, if we added both of our heart rates together and divided by two we would both be normal :woot:

Saw my Cardio guy. The tweaking worked!  I am normal! I will opt for Lamenectomy in September.

Did "Heavy" gardening today. I sure knew it!
