All my lilies & marginals are hail damaged
« on: May 30, 2012, 05:48:19 AM »
I've seen pictures & I've cringed every time I see or hear about it.  2 storms with high winds & hail rolled thru this morning. Not big hail but enough that all the pads are shredded.  Have to refund all my auctions that sold & cancel all the new ones I posted yesterday.

I know most of the plants will recover but everything was looking so nice.  It is a sad sight to see now.  There is supposed to be another batch of storms tonight, too.  I'm grateful it wasn't bigger hail though.

It's sad what weather can do to our growing things. Around here we had warmth very early so the many orchard trees in this area budded early. Then of course there were several frosts after that and now the people who earn their living by growing fruit, don't have any crops. They said it hadn't happened since 1945.

So sorry, Kat. I'd really love to know what Mother Nature is so angry about this past year or so. She's making it very difficult to do those things we love.

In our area...killing frost and spring hail are the norm it seems.  The good thing about lilies is that they recover quickly.  Fruit and vegetable crops are often done for the season.

I've had two peach crops in 20 years.

sorry to hear that-- water plants are super tuff--but, money is also hard to come by for someone who sells them during these times to support their other habit whether it be collecting plants or ponds so I can soo feel your pain....sales only last soo long and if your not able to sell in that short of time then no money comes in until the next season....

Terrible news! Sorry to hear of the damages caused by the storm!  As the wise growers above mentioned your plants should recover fast this time of the year.  Maybe you can ask the buyers if they can wait until the plants recover before you send them out.

Thanks for all of the encouragement.  So far 3 people have said yes, go ahead & ship & have been nice about it.  I couldn't imagine having to support my family with what I do.  As it is I'll have to hold off on some things I wanted.  It is amazing that any crops do manage to survive with the way weather seems to be extreme all the time.  It certainly isn't as bad as damage to the house.  Keeping my fingers crossed that the last round tonight isn't bad.

Sorry to hear it. I hope the rest of your customers are as understanding as the two who have said to ship anyway.

Sorry that you got hail Kat! We are 60 miles from you and got high winds, thunder, lightning and lots of rain. It's a shame that summer precip here doesn't occur unless there's a storm.

So far everyone has been understanding.  Between storms I needed to go to the store & saw a lot of trees & big branches down from the high winds.

The tornadoes earlier this year missed us, so I guess it was our turn with the hail.  Yep, TX & it's storms can be scary.

One customer demanded a discount or free plant, a couple others asked for the plants to be held a couple weeks, and everyone else has been understanding about the situation.

The blooms are still popping up at least & I know that it will just take time.  More storms this week but hopefully no hail.

Cindy, that pond is left empty in winter, so as soon as I start pulling my largest tropicals which usually are the blues/purples from the coldframes they go in there.

When we get a hail, I just pinch off the worst damaged pads and keep a watch for the 'yellowing' ones.  Usually within a couple of weeks things are looking better   {:-P;;  unless you get a second hail.

By the way, your bloomers all look great.

That really bites Kat. You should start hitting Santa up for a screened enclosure. For the whole back yard.   O0 You might have a few holes in the screen, but they can take the hail fairly well.

hey kat...so sorry about the storm damage. will tell you that i would always buy them from you Anyway knowing that you always sell a good product and healthy plants. leaf damage is temporary. how about a 'storm sale' with a 5% discount (yes, i know your plants are so reasonable in the first place but it would be a hook)   good luck! i love getting a pkg from you. andi
