Plants in my garden...
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:39:00 PM »
I have been happy with many of the blooms that I have in the garden this weekend, I will share some.

First is Orange Calibrachoa, then a Maidenhair Fern, blue Lobelia and a Shasta daisy.

Cheers,
Sean

I LOVE the color of that Calibrachoa!  I tried to get that color, but they didn't have them in single pots, only in hanging baskets already made up and I was too cheap to pay the price for the basket.  All your blooms are stunning!

I will try pollinating the Calibrachoa so I can collect seed for next year. I have seen this color only a few times in the last ten years and I love it.

I was so excited to find the orange calibrachoa plant today at a new-to-me nursery, after seeing your picture last night, Sean.  I bought 2 6 inch pots - they weren't cheap, but I needed a pick-me-up so I splurged.

I had intended to put them in some floating islands, but I just read that they do not like to be kept wet??? Please tell me this isn't so??? I will pot them up if so, but they'd look great in the pond with all my other orange flowers nearby.

They stay pretty moist here because of all the rain we get but I have them in very loose organic matter so there is a lot of air surrounding the roots. I fear you could loose them in a floating island. Something that would work in your floating island though is Chameleon plant aka Houttuynia cordata and it has nice color variegation.

Sean, tell me how you would go about pollinating them please

LuAnn, I have two plants of this so I will cross pollinate with a fine sable hair brush in hopes of seed pods. I try to wait until fall as seed production takes more out of the plant than blooming and can cause the plant to stop blooming all together as this is it's final life cycle act for annuals.

Cheers,
Sean

Thanks Sean.  I don't know if the bees pollinate them, I don't remember if I've seen seed pods on them after they bloom.

I actually have been looking for some Chameleon plant this summer but haven't seen any for sale around here. Actually, that's not entirely true - the large pond store just over the border in NJ had a few but when I picked one to purchase, I saw snails on it and quickly put it back on the shelf.

I might try one of the calibrachoas and see what happens in a few days - I will pot it losely in the coco fiber and hope for the best.
