Any tips about parrot's feather?
« on: July 10, 2012, 02:47:03 PM »
I bought a 3' pot of parrot's feather a few weeks ago.  I have the pot on the shelf, about 10" underwater.

The fronds are getting pretty sickly.  Any tips?  Thanks in advance.

Are the roots planted in dirt?  Ends must be planted in dirt & then it will go like crazy.   I keep about 1"-3" of water over the soil/pot, also have it growing out of lotus pots, & have also grown it in my aquarium with the roots in the gravel.

There is never enough room for all of the water lilies that I want ;-)

I gave up on them being planted. I like them better just stuck under rocks, poking out, and whatnot. But, I keep them trimmed way back. When they get leggy, I pinch them, taking off the root parts somewhat. They seem to get bigger and healthier when I do that. And you can keep them under control. Mine are fairly shallow though.

I float mine and they cover the surface but they grow into other pots and root.  all my marginals are shallow  in pots with holes in the bottom and the top level with water if the pond is filled as should be... hardly ever :)

I also have more luck with it floating.  It will stick where it wants and is really easy to control--unlike my water celery--the bain of my existence!  I'm sorry I ever introduced it to my pond!   ;)

Mine have literally covered our pond.  Soon to be thinned out.

Over a month later - still spindly . . .   >:(-

Put some in the waterfall on the side where it is wet - that's spindly too.   Oh well . . .

Reedman would you like me to send you some big plants , I dont know how big your starts are/where but I seem to have problems to with things that start little.  I dont know if its fish, snails or what.  Your close to me in distance I can prioritymail  you a good size box for postage, should be about 6.00
