I would worry more about her being egg bound--she is awful eggy and koi need a fasting period during the winter in order to absorb eggs...if your weather stays warm enough that you are feeding year around--you really should hold food back for a month or two during the coolest months--koi that don't get 4 season feeding are prone to get egg bound...

To expand on what Lawanna said.   Don't worry about her now. If she still looks that way in a couple of months refrain from food. Your fish will eat the side of your pond and be fine. I am with her. If that is a recent pic she should have spawned. Another way to force spawning is to do a half water change. Add dechlor if you use city water. The temp change can force a spawing.

Do you feed your turtles in the water or on a rock?
I thought you fed you turtles above water. I read the whole post about feeding turtles that went on forever about feeding your turtles. After you asked Turtle Mike.

From reading your posts I would recommend you get someone to take your koi. It seems the you are afraid or hate them. I am sure you can get someone to take them and you just worry about your other fish.  Makes it easier on everyone.

Why on earth would I hate the Koi? >:(- No idea how you got that idea. They are the same fish Iv'e had for years.  I compare your comment to a woman fiding out the  father of her children is not!  She would not give her children away! >:(-  Yes, the fish being Koi does create some problems, but so what?  My pond community has thrived. It must be suitable.
Turtles must be in the water to eat!  I doubted that at one time and went to great effors to see for myself.
They will go after food on a rock, but must drag it into the water to eat it.
I will do as a few posters above suggested.  Just go on and do exactly as I am doing.
If I was not an administrator I'd not be so polite! o(:-)

Jerry, the fish you need to take care of now are the same fish you were taking care of this time last year.  What has worked for you in the past will work for you in the near future anyway.  At some future time, you might need to add more filtration.  (How do I know, I don't have Koi either)

If the koi begin to be a problem, then you can decide what if anything needs done different.  The girl being egg bound is a problem.  I'd try the water change to encourage her to spawn and see what happens.  You might be worring for nothing right now.

Jim, I don't feel that Jerry is saying he 'hates' koi...simply that his intention wasn't to have koi because his pond isn't set up for them.  Now that he discovers that some of his pets are KOI...he has concerns.

I never got into this 'ponding' for any reason but the lilies...then you add fish for the skeeters in the still waters...then etc etc etc

Exactly!   Id have made 3 feet deep pond and have special planters.
At he koi club events at a variety of koi ponds I saw filters that had to cost many thousands. As well as a vast array of plumbing.
I think my 100 Gallon Skippy will handle it. If not, I can cull.

I am sorry Jerry. I thought you wanted to be rid of your Koi from these responses.

"I do have trouble keeping plants, so maybe, just maybe.  I usually blame the turtles.
Not a big koi fan, I am a big plant fan!  Do they taste good? "

"I am not happy if they are koi.
It will, however explain some of my plant problems."

I did not mean to offend. I was just trying to help with your situation you seemed to be in.

I liked the fish fine before I know they were Koi. I still like them.
When I asked about how they taste it was a mere joke.  Carp are the most poular fish in the world! Look it up.

Jerry, koi are very easy to spawn, if you are worried about her being egg bound.   (That wouldn't concern me.   I raised koi for 30 years and never had one have a problem.)   If you want her to spawn, and the weather is cool enough where you live, do a big partial water change.   Then let the other fish eat the eggs if you don't want to raise the babies.   If it is too hot now....do it in October.

not to scare anyone or tell anyone they don't know what they are talking about but, egg bound is a serious thing--they can and do die from it....once its done there really isn't a sure fire way of saving them-you can try hormone injections and hope but bound is exactly what it implies they will not be able to pass  the eggs--I'm not saying however  this is the case with her now-but, if she doesn't pass or re-absorb those eggs by next year it is very possible what it will be--what I am sayin' is please make sure to fast the fish  for a 6-8 weeks thru the coolest time of year-to prevent it.....it would help her now to spawn if you can but, truth is we can encourage it but, can't make it happen.....and again you could try hormones thats how the Japanese spawn but, I wouldn't suggest a back yarder to do so--I don't even use them.....so as long as she is fine this season just make sure to fast them all--it won't hurt the koi or the turtles....and if you really don't want to fast the turtles just feed them up on shore.....if there is anything I can help you with Jerry just give me a holler via email...if I can't help you I have alot of KHA friends (koi health advisors) and others who have kept koi for many many years who can.....You are right there is a difference between keeping koi and goldies-filtration,destruction are but a couple of things that multilply once you put koi into the mix....
