Blue Lily
« on: February 13, 2007, 05:42:17 PM »
I want to add a pretty blue, preferably medium to dark blue lily to the pond this year. Any recommendations?

I think Star of Siam is one of the prettiest blue lilies.

The best blue fitting that description is N. Laura Frase. It's one of the bluest you can find. I have bluer but they are my own hybrids and I keep them for hybridizing so will not release them.

You should be able to find N. Laura Frase readily with a Google Search.

I also agree with Marilyn, Star of Siam is another good one but it gets HUGE pads. It is a nice meduim cornflower blue

Cheers,
Sean

I have to agree with Marilyn C. It is a beautiful lily, beautiful dark mottled pads and an interesting lily, petal and stamen texture. If you want a good idea of some of the better ones out there other than this go to the following link...
http://www.victoria-adventure.org/water_gardening_images/2006_iwgs_blues/gallery1.html
It is a collection of blues grown out by FAN for last year's symposium. Although, some of those lean a bit more to the purple. It is a good starting point.

Here is a pic I took last fall of N. Star of Siam.
The second pic is the blue form of N. capensis.

That N.Capensis is really beautiful. I like the white petals around the bottom. The one pictured at Victoria hasn't white petals. Are you sure that's the right name for the one pictured? Everything else about it looks identical.

http://www.victoria-adventure.org/more_than_links_images/perry/tropicals2/capensis.html

Is that a tropical? I'd guess being blue it is?

N. 'capensis' is a species lily from Africa and it can be quite variable in color. It comes in white, pink, blue and purple, all of which are correct to the species name.

Hi Lou,

I also love N. William McLane and N. Judge Hitchcock but I find them to tend much more to the purple spectrum, not as blue as others like N. Blue Beauty and N. Laura Frase. For a lighter blue you might think of N. Woods Blue Goddess and N. Pamela.

Spring seems to be here on the Wet Coast, all my plants are growing and trees are breaking bud. The clematis is budding and the daylilies are growing.
I have also noticed my waterlilies are beginning to send pads to the surface.

hi again sean, we are in the midst of a huge ice storm. spring is only a hope at this time, although my new hybrid seedlings are doing quite well in the basement with pads about 4 inches and going strong. i will put them in the greenhouse next month.

Best luck with the hybrids Lou O0

I just started a new batch of seed here under my computer yesterday and had a few that I started a few weeks ago. I am seeing underwater rosettes for the ones I started a few weeks ago and should have germination from the new batch in a few days.

I like King of Siam. I commented on Laura Frase in Sean's post about new lilies wanted, but should have KOS too. If I can manage to get some spares, I would be happy to share. William McLane is good and Tina is a classic--basic, but still a classic. Aquarius was great, and I once had Rhonda Kay too.

Well lets's face it i like all lilies, but for a sky blue I would try Margeret Randig, or Bob tricket and for more purple colors I would try Tina (great aroma!) or Director George Moore.

Pics are in order of mention.

I really appreciated Perry Slocum for his many accomplishments and contributions but I have to say, I am a stickler for correct color and that is not what Laura Frase looks like. Perry often used a blue filter on his camera to compensate for the camera's natural tendency to pull out the reds of the subject. N. 'Laura Frase' does not look like that in real life.

Here is a photo I took of it with my own camera and I know well that the color is true to form.

This is Laura Frase.

Hey Sean:

I like the Laura Frase in your photo...I tend to really like the sky blues, but I agree its hard to find good picture etiher due to lighting or filters or worse yet those photo shop nuts.

I agree that the laura frasse photo is not correct. blues are the most difficult lilies to photograph. i know i have some nice photos of Laura somewhere, but could not find them. here are some nice blues, in order:
Blink by John Meeks , Brooklyn Blue, by John Meeks, Pamela and William McLane..

HOSG....there are no blue hardy lilies.  First one to come up with one will be on easy street.<g>

The problem with N. capensis is that the name has become a dumping ground for any blue lily with green pads.  Even in Timgod's picture, if color correct, the inner sepals in the species description are not white and the flower shape should be stellate.
