Columbine flowers
« on: March 29, 2013, 04:35:45 PM »
My columbine that I grew from seed a couple of years ago is blooming again, so I guess spring has arrived.  I feel bad for those of you still dealing with snow but then you won't be getting our air conditioning bill  ;)

Nice blooms.

We're still paying heating bills.

Wanna bet?  It gets hot and humid here in northern Illinois in the summer.  I was more comfortable in summer when I lived in San Angelo.

Beautiful flowers, by the way.  We won't see Columbine blooming for another month.

Yes, mine are still sleeping and the flower beds are still covered with leaves and winter debris--which makes me realize I have a lot of work ahead!! But today will be mid 50's and sunny which does help with the attitude!!   ;) Thanks for the beautiful pics of that eye-soothing GREEN!!!  8)

I would love to have blooming columbines in my garden too!  I'm not very good at it since they don't like me.  I get to admire your beautifully colored blooms!

Those flowerbeds are in the shade the majority of late spring/summer.  The columbine seem to be doing fine there.  Just wish they'd bloom longer.  May try dead heading some instead of trying to save the majority of seeds.  Have tried begonias & other types of annuals without a lot of luck.  The annuals looks so sickly by July.  Last year I got spider mites on the columbine, so I'm sure I'll have to spray them again this summer.

They are fairly easy to grow from seeds if you've got plant lights to grow them under or a coldframe/greenhouse.  Start in late summer & grow over the winter planting outside in spring.  Of course you won't see blooms until the next year though.  Dark purple & pink ones would reseed themselves around my Grandma's house, so it is a nice reminder of her.

Love columbines.  Thanks for sharing.  A few of mine are just now sending up flower spikes and I should see flowers soon.

If you scatter 100s of seeds you should get some to successfully grow.  Good luck & let us know how it turns out.  Finally found my stash of seeds leftover from last year & have them in the fridge.  Will pot them up in about 4 weeks & see if they sprout for planting next spring.

Kat, I'm drooling over your pretty flowers!  O0  No spring temp here, yet.  Can't wait for spring to come and stay for a change.  I'm done with freezing cold temp for a change.  I'm sure we will skip right into Summer from Winter.

Such pretty colors together! Mine are in full bud and about to bloom, but for the freezing temps we are supposed to get tonight. :-\

I love columbines, wish they re-bloomed if you removed the seed pods. I had Black Barlow and a Double Blue that I do not remember the name of.

Sowed seed this year from a blue LeeAnne sent me years ago. Some sprouted, will see next year how they look.
Yours look great!

Cheers,
Sean

Very beautiful photos. Columbines were one of my father's favorite flowers. Fortunately I have one columbine that was his and have moved it several times and it survived or over 40 years. I also have a Night Blooming Cerius that was his - still alive and well, along with iris and peonies that were in our yard at home. My dad would have been called a 'master gardener' - we didn't know that at the time :0) He LOVED flowers of all kinds and tended them with loving care. Guess I do the same - same love - but not as much care :0) - especially if it is hot, ha ha ha.

Wish I had a photo of the 50' x 8' wall of climbing red roses he had. Just have the picture in my head :0)
