Tiny Pond Filter Ideas
« on: July 11, 2013, 12:18:21 PM »
I just added to my pond collection, by building a small wading pool for my box turtle. It has maybe 40 gallons of water tops.

Any ideas for a very tiny filter with a small footprint?
My pond is a turtle pond!

2006: ~135 gallons of water in a 150 gallon stock tank.
2012: ~250 gallons in a 330 gallon stock tank
2013: ~40 gallon in-ground wading pool for my box turtle

One RES, and a passel of gambusias.

Have you searched for an Adams filter?

Just an idea I'm trying now.

I drilled numerous holes in a gallon size ice cream bucket.  I took a soap tub that fit inside the bucket and drilled hole in it also.  I cut a hole in the top of each to run the tubing and power cords through.  I placed a submergible pump in the smaller tub then I  wrapped the smaller tub with filter media (blue air conditioner pad) and dropped it inside the larger bucket and submerged the bucket.  The water is pumped up through a TT with lava rock covered with more filter media.

I am rinsing the media twice a week now.  I might add some quilt batting on top of the TT next week.

I hope you find something that works for you.

That is probably the kind of thing I will end up doing, but with a very tiny container and batting. My pump is only a few inches by a few other inches, and the pool is super-small.

we use rubbermaid containers with lids and drill holes almost all the way to the bottom for letting the water in and the cords and hose go out of the top. I use nylon netting around the pump to filter solids. To hide it, I use a small piece of flagstone on top. There are so many shapes and sizes to choose from, I'm sure that you can find something that's just perfect for your situation.   :)
