3 buds/1 stem Rhonda Kay
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:18:00 PM »
As I viewed the photos people have posted of lovely ponds with many flowers in bloom, I was thinking I was hoping to see more lily flowers in my own tank ponds when I discovered this strange site: 3 buds on one Rhonda Kay stem.  It is hard to get a picture of all three buds at the same time!  The largest bud opened up today.  Has anyone else encountered this in their tropical lily experience?

That is wild! I have lots of Rhonda Kay plants and blooms and have never had that to happen. Watch the plant to see if it happens again. That would be really interesting even more so if it happened again.

The first bloom finished and the second bud opened a few petals today.  I did not take a picture...I was hoping that tomorrow it might open up more.  The third bud is pretty tiny....not sure it will do anything.

Here is the second bloom.  I don't know if the third bud will bloom....I can't really see much swelling of the bud and it may get pulled down by the other fading blooms anyway.

I ended up cutting off the stem since it didn't look like the third bud was going to do anything.  When I cut it off, I realized that the stem looked like it was several stems fused together.  And, as I look at the last picture I posted, it is possible to see that the stem has "ridges" which I think results from the fusion of separate stems.  Interesting that it has happened in Perry's Baby Red as well....I have that hardy as well.

This is relatively rare event, but does happen ( I forgot the terminology, maybe fission, perhaps Sean remembers it).

Here is Red Flare doing the same thing
