Odd daytime visitor!
« on: February 22, 2007, 02:10:32 PM »
I was really surprised to see this little guy coming across the snow this afternoon.  He stopped and got a drink from the stream then headed for the deck to check out the dog food bowl.

We found one under the bird feeders the other night. . . everyone (the kids, me and DH, the dog and a couple of cats) went out to see him.  He was a little embarrassed but decided the audience was ok when I tossed him a little handful of dry cat food.

Yes, he was chubby.  It was nice and warm and sunny today, guess he decided to venture out a little early.  A lot of the ice on the pond melted and I can see half of the bottom!  The fish are still hiding under the frozen side, can't wait to see them!

Maybe he's a hungry, pregnant she and that's why she was out early . . . .

Good question, I wonder too.  They are active here in zone 5 all winter.

Nice catch and yes unusual for day time they normally are nocturnal, but I've seen a few in the day.  I do not believe they do hibernate, they are active here also in the winter.  They have I very short lifespan also something like 3yrs, maybe that's why they play dead, practice.

Aw, he looks cold!!   Looks like a male...they have a broader head than females.

So nice of you to not mind him eating a little dog food.

I rehab possums and we are putting out around 40 lb. of food a night for the possums and raccoons here.
Fortunately, the food is donated to the rehabbers, so I don't have to go broke trying to buy so much of it.   We have gotten an over abundance of food the past week, so will probably up the amount we put out now.   Any that is left, the crows eat it the next morning, although, very seldom is any left.

Great pix Karen!

Some people hate possums coming around but they don't seem to be as mischevious as racoons!   Racoons seem to always find a way to get into our garbage cans. Even when we have a lid fastener on them!

I have a place on the side of our house (woods)  where I throw out our table scraps, etc.   Guess I shouldn't complain about the Racoons because I draw them by doing that.

Just saw a dead Possum on the road yesterday, already! :'(

Haven't noticed many opossums around here lately, but the skunks are waking up and causing a stink!  I think the length of day starts waking up hibernating animals and that somehow is linked to breeding times.  There will be lots of baby skunks around in a few months (along with many raccoons too)   :P  Going to have to get really creative this year with the cat food cans cuz they get enough to eat in the barns!  ::)

Thanks for all the comments.

Marilyn, its nice to know that he is a boy, so we can name him.  He has been making daily afternoon visits.  Its funny to watch the cats, they just sit and look at him like "what in the world is it?"  We have also seen a raccoon in the afternoon, guess the weather has things mixed up.

Lots of skunks around here suddenly too, but sadly they are all dead in the road.  I just mentioned yesterday that it must be mating season, cause they are everywhere.  We are fortunate to have lots of wildlife, had 14 deer in the front yard the other day, but didn't get the camera in time.

Here's a pic of a new squirrel feeder hubby made.  The idea is for the squirrel to sit on the ledge, raise the lid and get a seed, but this guy had other ideas.

My husband calls them rats with furry tales, but I love watching them.  Last year we had a family that would visit dayly  I could sit and watch from the deck steps just 5 ft away, those little ones were so funny

What a great shot Marla! We do have rats here with big fuzzy tails 8-)~They are pack rats. When I first found one I thought it was so cute and sweet??? {nono} Our nephew laughed at me and said oh no aunt Debbie you don't want them hanging around they are rats! I just couldn't belive it tell I got them in my tack room. The  :swear: blasted things drag off anything they can move. They even got a bridal off a wall hook and tried to drag it into there nest in the wall. They chewd a huge whole all the way threw my good saddel pad and Navaho blanket. &-) I put rat bait in there all winter to no avail. They just eat it and go on with there nasty little ways. I'm just not sure how I'll get rid of them now. short of  But the squrrils dig up my bulbs and I'm always chaseing them away. 8-)~

Great picture Marla, we enjoy the squirrels just as much as the birds.  We have grey squirrels and fox squirrels (reddish brown in color).  I would love to have black squirrels, we saw them once in Michigan.

I really didn't know there were true "packrats".  Just thought it was a name for people that couldn't stand to throw anything away, like my husband :-\
