City issues a pond water warning
« on: May 05, 2014, 02:52:03 PM »
They have added chlorimines ( i think i have it right ) and it may be dangerous to fish!

I am not worried. I am sure all the same rules apply. 8-)~

Our water company changed from just chorine to chloramine as a disinfectant.  Chloramine lasts much longer and definitely is bad for our fish.

I use a chloramine remover when I add water to my pond or aquarium.

Probably depends on how often you do a water change and how long the Chloramines remain. Probably safer to add neutralizer, or run your fill water through a solid block carbon water filter. Wikipedia says "can hurt aquatic animals." That's why the city sent a warning.

My understanding is chloramines never dissipates. We have both in our warer. I use chlorine and chloramine remover in one bottle.

I logged on just to see if I could find information on a problem I have been having and here it was. About three weeks ago we had a skimmer repair and had to take the water down right at about 50 percent. I have always used a product that removes chlorine. Not knowing that the city changed to chloramines last year! A public notice was issued but only on line.  I did the research to find out because our city didn't know. Anyway we have lost on average 4 fish a day since it happened. I did not know what was happening. The ammonia level  was high because after treating for the chloramines it leaves behind ammonia. So this has been a terrible learning experience. I will never use the product I was using always will use a product that treats for both chlorine and chloramines.  Today no fish loss but only time will tell how many more I may loose.
