Help plz first time pond
« on: March 04, 2007, 08:33:32 PM »
Okay , dug out most of of our pond with measurements of 17 feet long with 14 feet wide and a 8 inch wide shelf around 3/4 of the pond. The pond is 3 feet deep for about 2/3 of pond and sloping up to about 18 inches at opposite end.
I want to buy my filter and waterfall with an external pump.
This is my question, Do you hook the bottom drain into the skimmer and allow the pump to suction through the skimmer, and discharge goes to waterfall.
Any help here would be great..  Oh yeah it will be around 3000 to 3500 gallon

Thanks

You should have the BD connected to a settlement then to your filter then pump back to pond via tpr's;)  Run the skimmer in a separate circuit. Here you can connect a UV if you want then back to pond via waterfalls :D

TPR's? Aren't those for koi ponds? I didn't see koi mentioned. A water garden or goldfish pond doesn't need TPR's.

No I didn't see koi mentioned too {:-P;;  I mean the pond is having a BD so I can't see why it can't have tpr's. This will aid the waste down to BD :)

Also, I'm just suggesting. If you want to build something might as well do it right the first time ;)

That's a good size pond 8)

I can't comment on pressure filters coz I've never used them before. But I would insist of having a settlement chamber first from BD. Have you checked out other media like K1, bioflow9, etc? I Have 3 chambers, 1st SC with VMS, 2nd moving bed and 3rd is jmatts then water pump back to pond ;)

Place your BD at the deepest section and have the floor sloping to it.

Do you have any drawings???

The place im purchasing says that the system does not require a settler, the hydro skimmer passes it thru the press filter for collection then on to the waterfall filter.

And well it might not, but I can bet the filtration will be better for a settlement chamber of some kind.  It will keep the cleaning of the rest of the filters down too since it will take out he heavier stuff.  Might consider 2 bottom drains with that size pond?  Effective area of a bottom drain is about 6 feet...maybe more with air domes.  I wish I had a 3rd in my pond

Have you considered a deeper pond?  Helps with temp control and gives more volume and the fish like it better.  Can't make it to deep.

Personally I would run skimmer and BD off seperate pumps. IMO it would give you greater flexibility and a built in backup in that, if one pump fails, you still have some filtration operative.
