Someone cleaned me out over the weekend...
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:07:29 PM »
Someone stole my Debit Card Number and emptied my checking account over the weekend.  >:(-
The bank thinks it is from that breach of security at TJ Maxx. ::)

Anyway, my bank is in the process of reimbursing me and calling a few places where checks were returned for insufficient funds, telling them that my account was hacked. Also issuing me a new Debit Card, new #, new PIN and all.
Also, I'm not getting charged for overdrafts. O0

Most of the charges were at Gas Stations, Marshalls, a Fuel Oil Company, McDonalds, some Country Store (never heard of it before), and a Jewelry Store in Indiana and Illinois.
When I was at the bank trying to clear this up this morning, they were tracking this person. They refreshed the screen to watch activities several times, and the person had just fueled up and had breakfast at McDonalds, just in the 20-30 minutes I was sitting there.
Haven't heard back from the bank yet, but they were going to try to catch the person using the CC cameras at the gas station.
Waiting for a call from my bank, or Indiana or Illinois Police. {-)

So if you have shopped at TJ Maxx in the past few weeks, keep an eye on your Debit Card activity and/or your CC activity.  :(
Peace to all  ... Joyce

That really sucks!  A dear friend of mine down here had her entire bank account emptied not once, but twice!  She went to the bank after the first time and did all the right things, but they didn't protect the account at all and the bad guys came back 2 months later and did it again!  They did it the same night that her hubby's paycheck was deposited each time.

I hate crooks.

Wow, really sorry to hear about that happening to you. I did hear about the TJ Max thing though.
What I don't understand is how they can use the numbers with you having the card.

Good Luck,

Man, I hate to hear stuff like that. Sorry Joyce.

Joyce, that is a real pain. I know, seeing I worked customer service at a bank for many years and can tell you some real horror stories, not that yours isn't.  You might not think it's worth it but I'd almost consider discontinuing the use of that checking and opening a new one. I know, it's a pain too.

So sorry this happened to you, Joyce, and to the other folks as well! I've never used a debit card, but we had our MasterCard credit card hacked twice within about 3 years. Once I suspected a web site I ordered something from. Both times the bank caught it quite fast, reversed all the charges, and issued a new card with a different account number, although it took a couple of phone calls to remove one big charge. At least with a credit card, it's the bank's money they take, not your own! I had a lot of automatic monthly debits on the card, and it was a pain to change the account number for all of those. Since then, I try to cut back on the automatic monthly payments (easy now that I use online bill payment), and I try to use a secondary credit card or Paypal if it's an online purchase from someone I'm not sure about.

My credit card security is so tight that once they called my husband at work about some "questionable charges". He called me right away, all worried. It turned out I had just bought a new fridge, charged something at the post office, then ordered something off the web, all in the same morning, and that triggered their security concern. But I'd rather they call than not call!

My sister had her wallet stolen at work just a couple months ago.  Same MO, went to gas stations all over.  I know he didn't have your debit card like hers, but he still made her life a mess for a while.  It had all her papers where she has temp custody of her grandson.  Socical services didn't act like they wanted to believe her at first.  Her work gave her a drawer with a lock, but that's it.  Didn't even tell her they were sorry.  I know she wasn't held responsible for the transactions that were made, and all was reinbursed.  She was just out her cash in her wallet.  Mean people just suck.

That really sucks. I have heard of money just disappearing before but the Bank usually finds the error and replaces it eventually.

I am sure they will catch the person and I hope they penalize them to the fullest extent of the law. Fraud is fraud, mo matter how you look at it.

Cheers,

To protect your card, one should never let the card out of sight.  Some dishonest employees may have a skimming device http://idtheft.about.com/od/methodsofthef1/p/Skimming.htm that is used to record all the information contained on a credit/debit card.  The electronic device is palm sized and it only takes a moment for the employee to scan your card and steal your information.  In addition, these thieves sometimes will attach their skimming device to an ATM, usually at a grocery store or the like.  To avoid this, pay close attention to the ATM machine to make certain it has not been tampered with.

Yep,  They had a story on the news last week.

It says a December 2006 theft may have compromised the credit and debit card numbers of some of customers, going back 3 years.

--And this affects not just TJ Maxx, but Home Goods, Marshalls, and AJ Wright... all owned by the same company.

How horrible!  Someone got my cc number and made a few charges a few months ago, but the cc company caught on and called me.  They think my number was stolen since I had just enrolled in some kind of Google shopping account.
