Mother Nature played a trick on us
« on: April 04, 2007, 11:51:21 AM »
Probably much like everyone esle.  It was 83 yesterday, thunderstorms last night and hail.  Then today its 41, very windy, and feels like 31. Burrrrrrr.

Going to cover my azeala bush, peonies and apple tree and try to save the buds and blooms.  It really stinks.  Mother nature played a cruel joke.

I hear you Kim!

I got ahead of myself and planted a few annuals over the weekend..... DUMB

Tonight is supposed to be 21 here, the coldest night.

I'm wondering if this is going to affect the fruit trees?

My liliacs are just now beginning to bud out..... I'm going to cover them tonight with sheets, the rest will be towels, pillowcases, anything that I can find!

The clematis and passifloras are budded and blooming. At least it's just one night of freezing temps. :(

Ours is just a couple degrees above yours Bonnie.  Yes, I've got my sheets and other things ready.  I'm worried about my apple twig too.  I'm going to throw a sheet over it too.  I'll try to save as many as I can.  Its just hard to believe that it's 40 degrees different than yesterday.

Yes, what a cruel joke...19 degrees here on Thurs., Fri. morning, highs in the 30's with high winds, feels like 20*..My ferns are sending up fiddleheads and tender leaves, and fruit trees are in danger too.  What the heck!

Oh, shoot I forgot about my ferns coming up.  Thanks for the reminder.

So, they are called fiddleheads.  I had only had them for a year last spring.  I was messing with that flowerbed, and stopped and said what is that.  Looks like little ET heads.  My neighbors little girl was over at the time and she was 9, and said Oh those are just ferns coming up.  I couldn't help but smile, but I'm glad she was there.  I had forgot I even planted them, her Nana is the one that gave them to me guess that's why she knew what they were.  These are ferns from a creek that runs through her grandparents backyard, only 2 miles away.  So, I guess they're native ferns.

Yes Mary, the fruit trees are in bloom.

Everything is blooming early this year due to the above average temps that we've been having lately.

It's going to be 21 tonight, I looked wrong.. 42 was this mornings low......

Here in Wauconda, low 24* high 33* for tonight. My Lilacs were all budding, Daffodils and Crocus blooming. Bummer. Even the Podophylum peltatum was about 4" tall and ready to leaf out.
Typical Chicagoland Spring.  :-\

Kim-I've heard some people pick fiddleheads (probably a certain kind of fern) as a delicacy in the spring: kind of like asparagus I guess.  I don't know how they cook them, maybe saute them, but I think they gather them in the wild.  I planted these ferns also a year ago and am looking forward to seeing how well they do.  There are many native ferns here, but most of them grow in southern ohio and kentucky and people dig them up and move them around.  Wish we had the kind of woods that ferns grew in!  ;)

We have a lot of fiddleheads here, I haven't tried eating them, though.  Who knows if they are the right kind to eat, I don't want to chance it.

It never made it up to 80, the 60's has been the highest, but it's down to the 40's for the next week here.  So depressing.   :(

We got that too and this weekend we're supposed to have a couple of hard freezes.  And it naturally occurs right after I put all the potted plants out and DH planted the annuals . . . . haven't had a freeze this late in forever, but we aren't officially past the last freeze date yet . . . . .

It snowed in SE KS today, and just a few days ago it was 78*.   >:(-

My lilacs and tulips are blooming.  It's supposed to be 29 degrees tonight.  I hope it doesn't hurt any of the plants.  I don't have any annuals out yet, but I sure am glad I brought the tadpole's little bucket in off the deck.   ;)

We've had snow flurries off and on all day.  Sometimes so hard you can't see across the road.

Same here too. Snow this AM, and freeze warnings for tonight.
However, it is also chilly where we have the other house in Fort Myers.
