Moses in the cradle ?
« on: April 08, 2007, 08:11:14 PM »
Thought I had read some where here some one had this plant in their pond.  Can any one tell me how deep this plant can be set in the water or any other input would be helpful.

I would NEVER submerge this plant. {nono}
Maybe stick it in the crevices of waterfall rocks, off to the side so it doesn't get a lot of splash, and only the roots in the water.
And make sure you save a piece to pot up properly planted, in case all the pond planted ones rot.
This plant can grow in very arid conditions.
We saw it on our honeymoon in Eleuthera growing from rock crevices in drystack walls made up of coral rock. I took a few pieces home, and grew them in an 8" pot on my patio for years...pot was CRAMMED with the plant. I allowed the pot to get pretty darn dry before I watered it again on many occasions.
I would not expect it to do anything but rot if submerged.

By the way, the proper botanical name for it is: Rhoeo spathacea, syn. Tradescantia discolor, syn. Rhoeo discolor
Aka Moses in a Boat, Moses in a Basket... :P

Yup, it's in the same plant family Jerry.
There are variegated versions of it too.
But it doesn't trail, isn't an ivy....but make rosettes of foliage, like yucca, or agave.
Pups like a banana.
Also sends runners out that will start new plants.

 @O@ @O@  Thank you so... I had not been abe to find any thing on this.  I bought it as it was pretty and I thought I had read some thing about it in a post here.  I bought two peices of this and just set it at the edge of the pond and depending on the water level it was not allway in the water.

It is fairly common in 4" pots in houseplants at big box stores. Doesn't look nearly as nice as that big one though....
