Picotee...getting stronger
« on: August 23, 2006, 05:49:50 PM »
Hey Sean...you may remember I sent a picture of a flower with a faint picotee?  Well, I think I'm making progress.<g>  Not as good as the one from Thailand I saw a picture of...but stll stronger than my first attempts don't you think?

Odd thing is, it only seems to take in pastel colored lilies, my ponds and the ones from thailand, now that I think about it.

How far along is this lily Craig? I wonder if the Picotee will not become stronger as the plant matures.

I did also see the photo's of the two or three lilies from Thailand when I visited Rich and they really peaked my interest. I hope you can work with this characteristic, definitely a positive attribute I would welcome in future hybrids.

Your picotee edge is weak in this bloom but I bet you can work it into other hybrids and pull the gene further. It would be amazing on one of your darker fountain types, if you could develop a raspberry bloom with a yellow fountain and a white or yellow picotee, "look out" @O@  that would be my pick. Perhaps you should mamplafy this hybrid ;)

Cheers,
Sean

Craig I think that is absolutely gorgeous!!  I really love the color and the picotee accentuates it!

The lily is far enough along that I have some degree of confidence the picotee is fixed.  Right now I'm crossing it back and forth with a light blue with a yellow picotee which is weak in color, but the picotee is fixed enough that it is even in the sepals...to the extent it can be seen ( by the optimistic eye<g>) on the outside edges of the closed bud.

I'd like to see what happens with those crosses before I move on to mampla to try for a mop headed mutant.<g>  That'll be next year since I didn't bother with mampla this year....but that works fine with first trying to get a decent picotee on a decent bloom.

Craig, that is terrific!  That is what I mentioned in the other thread, and you were already producing it!  I can't wait to see what's ahead in the picotees.  That one is gorgeous already.

I wish you the best luck Craig! I have not found many new variants in my crosses that I would persue as desireable traits. However, Rich tells me to persue the changeable Blue to Lavender. It's not my cup of tea but I guess one needs to listen to the people who would grow the lilies and actively seek them out for their own ponds.

Cheers,

It looks like it's glowing!  And the "edge" of the petals (picotee, right?) are catching the glow.  I do like it.  Tammie
