Would love to buy some water hyacinths
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:54:45 AM »
For all you warm climate dwellers: I would love to buy some water hyacinths for my biofilter. Since they grow like weeds, just a few would be enough. Every fall, I have to compost mine, too cold here in the winter  :-\
Thanks,
Eija (backyardponder)

I have a small pond and the water temp is 65 right now. The water hyacinths go on top of the skippy where the sun heats the water even warmer.  Cool night temps swing the water temp a bit.  I put mine in around Mother's Day last year and they did fine. I get just a few and if the night temp goes too low, I move them in the garage for the night.

Tink, these should be fine.  If a threat of a heavy frost just cover like you do annuals.
Mine have always took several very heavy frosts until they die.....
