Poop ID, please!!!!!!!
« on: August 26, 2006, 04:38:18 PM »
I tossed a small amount of sunflower seed in this feeder yesterday afternoon and this morning it was full of this!  The feeder had sat empty all summer, someone sure found it quick!!!  Does anyone have any idea what did this?

I remember a post a long time ago, exactly the same poop as this.
Ended up being 'possum poop, I believe. (8:-)

And since I now have 2 resident 'possums,
now I know what their poop looks like. ::) (8:-)
When they eat a lot of birdseed, that's what it looks like.

Mine are so tame now from being trapped in the raccoon trap,
when I release them, they waddle out of the trap like, 'Thanks, Mom!' O0
But they leave their poops, and that is what they look like cuz they eat from my birdfeeders a lot.
Peace to all  ... Joyce

Ewe!  Never in a million years would I have dreamed that there'd be a poop Id thread on here.  But imagine my surprise when not only is there one, but someone is pretty much immediately able to ID the poop!!!

Too Funny!  Never underestimate the forum!

Thank you Joyce!!!!!!!!!  I am so relieved, I was afraid it might be rat poop.  >:( We do see possoms on a regular basis, guess I've never seen what they leave behind.  This is actually a birdbath on a stand and its hard to believe it crawled up there and didn't turn it over.
Wow, Joyce, not only can you ID every plant picture that shows up on here, but we now know that you can ID poop too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D
Thanks,
Karen

Rat poop is smaller than that and we have big rats here. I had a couple nesting under my bench last year and saw a lot of their poop. Nothing like what you have there.

Well, I could be wrong.
Maybe LI 'possum poop looks different! :o :D ?)(?

At first I thought it was Squirrel poop when I saw it by our birdfeeder,
but if that were the case, our entire yard would be covered with the stuff. ::)
I have never seen squirrels poop where they eat either.

So THAT's possum poop, eh? Thanks- that is good info. I have lots of poop around here, so it's always nice to ID it.

Now that I have a nice sized Concord grape growing all over my pergola, we have some new poop we need to ID. Whatever the animal is, it climbs up the pergola, and drops grapes & poop all over the deck. I'll take a picture next time it happens and post it here for the poo poo experts.  O0

Definately not rat or mouse, I bet squirrel looks just like theirs so not squirrel. Not raccoon, rabbit or deer. Not cat or dog either. Opossum is one I've never seen but Marilyn has seen plenty.....

This thread is highly entertaining!  lol

I did some poop digging on google, and discovered that possoms do indeed poop right after eating:

they also tend to poop right after they eat or drink, so if there's a food or water source left out in your backyard all night, they would be attracted to it.

Here is an entertaining piece by the Washington City Paper:

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/special/2006/poop0127.html

opossum droppings are slightly smaller than raccoon waste; the chunks are about index-finger-sized.

If you google opossum droppings, and click images, you'll get a couple of pics, too.  Just for those truly curious.   ;)

Someone needs to train the little bugger in eating etiquette.  He needs to hang his little behind over the edge the next time he raids the feeder.

This thread is very interesting!  I've never seen 'possum poop either, seen lots of possums but no poop.  Racoons go everywhere, and I've seen coyote, and fox too.  It's always great to learn something new everyday   lol

Aw, I think he's cute!!  You know, possums carry their babies in the mom's tummy pouch, just like a kangaroo. Everyone probably already knew that, though.

Oh he's kinda cute, in a possumly kind of way until you get too close and they open their mouth to hiss, then definitely creepy!   (8:-)  They really don't smell very good though, kind of like a skunk, only not as strong :-X
