Lining your nest, daft thrush style
« on: April 30, 2007, 11:20:23 AM »
This rather splendid thrush was obviously looking for building materials

He or she decided he or she liked the green string a top the arch

The problem was it was still attached to the arch at one end

none of the photos really show the ensuing tug of war but the string won ............. repeatedly.

So our head strong chap or chapess tried a different approach.....

Flying off with the end of the string

TWANG

Oh well if at first you dont succeed ........... try again

And off we go again

TWANG

He or she is IMO lucky they didnt break their neck, BTW they didnt fly off backwards, they took off facing forwards ie to the right and were yanked round facing to the left when the string snapped taut.

It's amazing what determination some birds have. We have a robin that keeps flying at our dining room window almost everyday now for a week, usually just in the morning. I assume he considers his reflection either a rival or a potential mate. Meanwhile he's making a mess of the window ::)
Great pictures. Hope you went out and cut that string for him ;D

GREAT pix!  I love watching birds do what birds do!  AND I have a cardinal who "fights" his reflection in the upstairs windows too

Great photos! I'd love to see a video of that!

I had to stop using the coir liners on my deck because the finches would shred them to get the threads for their nests.

We have a towhee who knocks on the front window - endlessly - in the spring and summer . . . . he's done it every year for about 3 years now (maybe 4?)

My youngest daughter likes to stuff dryer lint in mesh bags and hang them in the trees.  She also takes the scrap end bits of yarn I cut off things I'm knitting and hangs those from branches for the birds.  They all dissappear quickly in the spring . . . . .
