Hi Jen,
I pm'd you just now.

Jen asked the following...
Quote
Will you please pretty please go take a side shot of your pond so I can see how the design would look up against my house?
so I thought I would just add it here.

As to the side view of the pond. It's a tight space between the other pond on one side and the arbor on the other but here are a few shots from around the yard...

First of all Tim thanks for all of the photos and how to's on the Bog.... we all but built one this year and don't doubt we end up with one in the future.... I think they are great.

Do have a question on your flower pot that is on its side, I assume it is clay or ceramic and has water trickling out of it so the question is how did you make the hole for it, where is the hose coming in, do you have some gravel in it etc. etc.

Thanks Jim

The pot was predrilled but not large enough for the tube that I was going to need.
It's ceramic and fired. It's the kind a lot of people use for disappearing fountains.
I just went a different route with this one.
I buy a lot of stuff From Rolf Nelson at Nelson's Water Gardens in Katy Texas. Great people by the way.
I already had a pump so I just needed the extra tubing.
They would have sold me this sealing compound but I just paid them to fit it with the sealant since I don't have a large need for a $10 tube.
They charged me to seal it but drilled it out more so it was the right size and gave me the tubing.
I don't have anything in it. I thought about putting something in there but it would just be something I would have to clean from time to time.
The water presure coming out of the pot is too strong for any plant to stay in there.

Ok.
Here is a pic from yesterday morning. This is the basically 2 month anniversary of the pond. It has filled out quite nicely.
As I said in one of the earlier posts it would fill in enough to hide the PVC pipe and anything else I wanted to lose in the new jungle.

It's looking great Tim.  What is that light green leaf plant with the red stems?  There's one on the left side and I think another in the bog.  It's beautiful.

Alligator Flag, Fire Flag, Red Stemmed Thalia
Thalia geniculata
They get massive. I have some in my back yard that are over 10' tall.
They put out small flowers that hang on a zig-zag string looking thing. Very neat.
They freely drop seed so it could become invasive without your approval.
And since they get so tall, you could end up with plants 10' away from the main plant.

It is as red as rhubarb and gives some color and texture to a pond area.

Thanks Tim....... I have a small drill bit for ceramic but......... any and all ideas for creating an 1 1/4" hole in a ceramic/clay pot without cracking the pot are welcome.  :)

BTW Tim The bog is nicer with every shot you post

Thanks, it's really pretty.  I googled it and it says it can go from 6 to 8 ft tall.  Maybe a little too tall for my skippy  :(

Here are some pics of the 10' monsters in the back yard.
There is a closeup of the flowers.
There is also a pic of some babies that I left last week when mowing. They weren't there 3 weeks ago.

Are the 10' monsters in the back yard sitting in water?  I'm looking for some 8' monsters to hide a fence here but they have to be able to stand some strong sun and occasional strong wind.  Drip system so they will get plenty of water.  I've been trying to find some of the giant cannas but all they have around here are the dwarf varieties.

The 10' monsters are in a bog.
In normal soil they usually only get to about 5' tall.
They can suck up as much water as you can throw at them... like elephant ears.

I like it very much Tim.

I've never had the desire for an inground pond...but for a tropical lily pond.  This would work as an above ground with a bog.............hmmm............I'd better get to planning and maybe the boys will do it for Mother's day next year.

Tim,  haven't looked in on this thread in quite a while.  Your bog filter turned out great!  It's attractive and your water is nice and clear.  Good job on both the bog and the detailed instructions.  I built a similar sort of thing and it's kept my water clear for 4 years now.  I really like not having to mess around cleaning a filter on a regular basis.  I know that one day I'll be mucking out the gravel filter but until then I'm sitting back and admiring the lilies.  emm

If you only had 2' deep for a lily pond would you still need I foot deep for the bog, or would 8" depth of a cinder block be deep enough do you think?

I was told by Rolf Nelson that the surface area is much more important than the depth area.

Tim, aside from the TT we are finished with the lily pond. Next spring gonna do your bog pond over the little inground pond so it'll be like 2 ft on the sides and 3 ft in the middle. The tropicals are doing well since I raised them....both Siam's still sluggish. Anyway just wanted to thank you for all the help you gave me and Shep and you keep growing those beautiful lilies.  O0

When do you know to clean the gravel filter?

Hi Annette,  I don't know for sure when I will need to clean the filter.  There are several kinds of plants planted into the gravel and their roots do take up some of the nutrients present in the fish waste.  I expect that the filter will gradually fill up with organic matter and there will come a point where the plants can't make use of all the nutrients that are available.  I think that when that happens I will start to see green or cloudy water from the increased amounts of algae that will be able to grow with the additional nutrients in the water.  The water may start to look dirty or cloudy as bits of organic matter, silt, etc wash back into the pond from the over-full filter.  As mentioned, I don't really know but I'm anticipating that it will be one of those things where you "just know" when the time has come.  Hope this helps a little.  emm

Great idea Tom; to use the cinderblocks as a final filter. This is the method used in many 3rd world countries to filter non-potable water for drinking; using porous stone pots. I love it! Simple & effective! I have read that bog filters are the most effective filters for very large ponds too.  It is Natures Way! I will definitely file this idea for future use. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas. James.

bra8ndy8,
I apologize. I never saw your question as I do not check on this post since I first put it up.
I have about 6 types of elephant ears, lizard's tail, aquatic mint, thalia, sensitive plant... I think that's all but there might be something else.
I would not put the thalia in if I redid it.
I will have to get in there and dig it out at some point.
These are now over 10' tall regularly and the clump continues to try and expand beyond what I want.
For height though my elephant ears now regularly get to about 7 feet tall.
