Plant ID needed
« on: May 05, 2007, 01:47:36 PM »
I got cuttings from a fellow pond guy.  He called it Persian Shield.  I have since ordered Persian Shield and it is not very similar.  The nursry bouught Persian Shield was decimated in our freeze. This guy is easy to propogate , very hardy and is tidy.  I love the stuff.  Now, what is it?

I know Persian Shield, and that, Jerry is no Persian Shield. Now what it is, I have no clue. I'm sure Joyce will know. She knows EVERYTHING!  ;D

My first educated guess is it is definitely a Plectranthus.
Probably Plectranthus ciliatus, specifically 'Drege' but could be 'Zulu Wonder'.

Persian Sheild is Strobilanthes dyerianus.
Here are some pix of my PS...

Yes Joyce, my Persian Shield  that I bought looks just like yours.
I love the prostrate habit of my mystery plant.
A correction:  My Persian Shield seems to be coming back

Maybe you should send out some cuttings of it to me and Joyce so she can ID it and I can have it!!!  Does it live in the pond?  Does it tolerate shade (could be a great beach plant . . . .)?

Yes to shade, no idea how it will do in a pond.  I have Joyce's address, PM me yours.  I will pack in a baggie with some wet towels. It is tough! O0

I agree with Joyce that it is a Plectranthus. I thought that before I scrolled down and saw her reply. No clue which one though. Does it have any scent when you crush a leaf? Many Plectranthus do.

Thanks for the confirmation LeeAnne, seemed like my ID was overlooked, glad you noticed it. :(

I am pretty dammm sure it is Plectranthus ciliatus 'Drege', like I stated below.
But heck, I could be wrong. :)
