Sea Squill doing its thing.......Finally!
« on: August 28, 2006, 10:15:06 AM »
This Sea Squill (Urginea maritima) did not sent up a flowering stock the previous two years.  It's planted in the parkway and has only received winter rain during that time.  We receive no significant rain from May through October, averaging 13-14" a year.  This summer I installed a drip irrigation system and I guess this is its way of thanking me.  The stock is about 4' tall and it will likely grow another foot or two.  The bulb of the Sea Squill is huge, cantaloupe to honey melon size, and weighing roughly five pounds.  The yellow flowering plant is a Rudbeckia.

The plants in the parkway are frequently picked or sometimes even vandalized so I thought I better take a photo while it was still standing.  I also have red-hot pokers (Kniphofia) planted in the parkway and they are popular targets for picking.....

What a cool plant that is. 8)
Are you saying that you planted the bulb that size? Jeez, I've never seen any bulb that big. but what a payback for a little dripping.

That's quite a plant!  What a shame it might get plucked, though.  Probably kids.

Barb: I knew that when I planted stuff in the parkway that theft, vandalism and picking of flowers would be inevitable........ and I have had all three occur....

Yes Steve, the bulb was roughly five pounds.  Here's a photo of a Sea Squill bulb that I pulled off the Net.  The link where I pulled this photo sells them (over-priced) and says they weigh 6-8 pounds each.  The hand in the photo will give you some perspective...

Looks rather like that tower in Toronto.

Mike, you inspired me to start planting 'out on the street', but I just know I will not be as calm to vandalism. Perhaps the drip system could be supplemented by an off duty, heavily armed, Marine in a really bad mood?

Cheers,

Mike

That is different and pretty.  I have some of the red hot pokers too, I really like them because they are different.  I have some that bloom in white too.

Very nice Mikey!!  Does it reproduce itself as do other bulbs?

I'm pretty sure it must reproduce with offsets although I haven't seen such evidence as yet as indicated by multiple stocks or leafing.  I have two in the ground here and the other one has not flowered this year yet.  Local kids often trample through this area in search of lizards and it's possible they stepped on the head of the other bulb breaking off its stock....

About two years ago I actually caught one kid named Eddie, age 7 or so, with a pair of hedge clippers whacking away at some plant in the parkway.  He was attempting to "trim" some of my plants in order to better catch a lizard that was hiding there.   ::)  I gave little Eddie a piece of my mind and explained to him just how the cow eats the cabbage. &-)
