Recommended Tropical Waterlilies for Small Pond?
« on: May 12, 2007, 10:40:08 AM »
Sadly, the two Tropicals I bought last year did not survive, even in the greenhouse. So, I am needed more. I'm wondering which varieties would do best in small pots in my small pond in my greenhouse. Will have better weatherproofing this year.  I like dark rich colors best.
Thanks.

Potted in a Dixie Cup as I do, you can pretty much have anything.

N. colorata and White Colorata, a sport of the species are both naturally small. Dauben can be maintained small but it's quite boring in my opinion with all the other vivips on the market.

Ruby has a great vibrant color and will stay small if in a small pot.

There are many others, I grow Foxfire in a Dixie cup just fine but given a large pot for the roots to take off it grows to mammoth size.

Cheers,
Sean

I second that! Small pot = smaller plants. This is true for most tropical lilies. I grow most of my tropical water lilies in 4.5 inch containers. I also have 8 inch containers too but i plant three in it.

Sean, isn't your rule of thumb that most tropicals will grow fine if you bonsai down to 4-5 pads?

Dauben is boring colored to me. How about Tina? is she a good bloomer? If I am going to give greenhouse space to them they need to be good bloomers.

Tina is a very good bloomer. It takes cold fairly well and it makes vivips which is a plus...

Hey Leeanne:

TIna is one of my favorites and it is one of the most heady of the tropicals I have had.  Here are a few shots I have on file.

Tina has done well here and is a pretty colour. The other lilies that have done well for me so far are August Koch, Sandra Lyn, Lavender Lace and Midnight. All of these bloom well in small pots.

I like Tina for a small pond too and also Ruby. I find that the vivip babies winter over better for me than the older plants. I just found 4 more pots of lavender lace vivip babies that I left out over winter that are sending up pads. I also have a seedling with beautiful leaves that wintered over outside. I hope it blooms this year.

How about Albert Greenberg? Good bloomer?
It was one of the ones that didn't make it.

My main lily pond is only 3 foot wide and I fill it full of water lilies of all sizes and they do well for me.

LeeAnne, Albert Greenburg has not done well for me over the winter.

Tina has fared very well in my unheated, attached garage.

Tina from Tammie!:

Gosh, I love that pic. It is years old, but I still love it!

Ruby did well for me too, until I tried to winter it over in my kitchen.  {nono} Total faliure.

Colorata also has done well. May be boring to you, as Dauben is.

Karen, that photo is awesome.

Gander, yours are great too. What a lovely lily pond.

The pond in my greenhouse is 6' long and 2' wide and about 18" deep. The greenhouse will have heat and lights.

Love the pix all....

Their are so many beautiful tropicals.. hard to pick one from another.  If I had to choose, I would choose one with a pretty bloom and beautiful pads though...

Here is Star of Siam which I love.   I have no clue how it overwinters and about spread because I've grown it in my koi pond and let it get big.

Star of Siam takes up a lot of room even in a small pot for me so unless you only want one, I would rule that one out.

I would suggest a purple lily, they seem to be more cold tollerant. Tina, King of Siam, and Lindsay Woods are all good choices. LW is one I would like to add to my collection this year.

I love Lindsey Woods I got it last year. I did not get even one vivip baby from it either.
