"All systems ready" water temp question
« on: May 13, 2007, 09:35:29 AM »
I cleaned out the top pond yesterday, filled it back up, and installed the Sequence pump. All systems are ready to go.

Here's the thing, though. The water in the upper pond (1,000 gal) is 53.5 *F. The water in the lower pond (2,000 gal) is 65*F.

So, if 1,000 gallons of 53.5* water is mixed with 2,000 gal of 65* water, what will the resultant temp be? AND will it be enough of a change to shock the fish in the lower pond?

As you can imagine, I am itching to turn it on!

Karen-
Do you have a small extra pump you could use just to transfer part of the water more slowly? That way it would be a more gradual change for the fish.
Maybe you can add some fresh water to the top one as it's draining into the lower one?
Just a though.

Your pond looks LOVELY! Post more pics please! Isn't it nice to see spring return....FINALLY!!!?

Perplexed ponder, Thanks! Yes it sure is nice to see spring return. We had an awfully long winter (Gosh that was a terribly long winter).

I put a submersible pump in the upper pond, ran it through 50 feet of black flexible hose. Put the fifty feet of hose in direct sun, and pumped it back into the upper pond. By 3:00 pm, the water temp in the upper pond was 65*. The lower pond was 70* at that point, so I went ahead and turned it all on.

NOW it is spring.

What more could I possibly want on Mother's day than to fool around with my rocks & stream?  :)

PS/edit- my water is green from string algae and brown from Oak tannins. That will never go away and I quit trying.  O0

Karen-
That was a SMART solution!!
Your water looks fabulous to me!!  What a beautiful shot! The rock work is so natural looking. Love the face rock! My darned dog keeps falling in my pond and messing up my lily pots. Every time it gets clear, there he goes again!
I spent the day working around my pond too. It was gorgeous here today.

Kathy, Thank you. Ahh I see you are in SE Michigan. You probably get many systems that have passed by us! The weathermen can't forecast anything! Stinks, doesn't it?
But it sure is pretty when it's spring.  :) o(:-)

Thanks for the nice comments.

That looks gorgeous Karen!  I'm with Kathy- I think your water looks fine!  It looks like from the first pic that your fish are like mine- they see you near and they swarm in whatever part of the pond is closest to you begging for food LOL.  You are in zone 5 IL and look how many pads your lilies have up!!  Did you have them in a greenhouse earlier?  Wish mine were that far along here in zone 6 WV!  They grow fast once they get going though at least.
