How long can a pump run with no water?

Hopefully it will never happen, but who knows what can occur when a "sitter" is there?

Jerry you are worrying too much.. :o

Even though I've been there, done that. {nono}

I've got a couple of el cheapo Laguna pumps that have gone dry several times and so far so good.  But they haven't gone for more than an hour or so.

With my sequence pumps, luckily this has happened one time and it was only a few minutes. ( I think)

I know the maxflow Laguna pumps I use have some sort of sensor where they shut down somewhat based on the waterlevel, and will click back on when you fill back up.

You know Jerry I wonder if it would hurt the pump at all to run dry. Its not water cooled. It has an impeller of some sort to move that water but I wonder if it would hurt it to run dry.

Early on in ponding mine did run dry, a Laguna.  The water level had dropped and I wasn't aware of it.  Soon as I added water it ran fine.  How long was it thirsty? No idea.

Yes a Sequence Pump would be expensive to replace.

Hum.. good thought Gary but I thought most pumps were impeller driven...

They are bonnie but submersable pumps are cooled down setting in the water. The motor should not get hot on a sequence pump since its not water cooled.
