Perry's Fire Opal?
« on: May 17, 2007, 02:02:45 PM »
Has anybody ever grown this one? It looks lovely. What about its growth habit? Is it a biggie???? How often could I expect a bloom? I'm thinking about splurging at Lilypons for a full-sized one.

Perry's Fire Opal is very pretty!

It's spread can get to around 4'

If you decide not to splurge.. I will have a few for sale.
Approx. 4" rhizomes with a few 3" pads and new growth starting for $14.50

Good Luck and be sure and post pix when it blooms! O0

Bonnie, that sounds like a very reasonable size for a smaller pond like mine-is this a lily that would do well in a container? I ask because we are probably moving this summer, meaning I am leaving my pond  :'(  But I am excited to try a tropical in a contaner and maybe the Fire Opal would do well too? At least I can have a few lilies until I get a new pond dug, maybe next spring. Waaaaaaahhhhh.

Container, meaning whiskey barrel size?
Mine gets too large for a container garden and I don't know how well it would grow if you bonsai it.

How about a cheap preform or buy a small piece of liner and use building blocks, etc and make a small above ground to get you thru?

Hi Missy:

If you can wait a year i will be dividing Pery's Fire Opal next year for something of interest as a trade.  I think if you keep the pads trimed it would be okay in a 24" or larger pot.

Here's a picture from My PFO

I don't think I'll be in a position to trade next year as I'm leaving all my plants here in my little waterworld. I'll be starting from scratch all over again. I've already decided I want a bottom drain next time. This scooping up muck with the net ain't my idea of fun! My biggest worry is hoping that whoever buys the house will keep the pond going. Maybe I can put a contingency in-if you decide you don't want the pond you must call me and I will take everything to my new pond. It would just kill me if the new person let everything die. Oh I don't even want to think about it!!!!! :-\

CoolShades,

I'm posting a pic of my Perry's Fire Opal to compare it with yours. This was a purchased plant and (if my memory serves) the grower was Hughes. My pic is from an entirely different angle. The color looks true though.

I am in a state of uncertainty with many of my purchased lilies. My 40.00 Hermine is not Hermine, list goes on. Makes my blood boil.

Bonnie, is the one you have the one we traded?

Very nice pix all......

Karen, If I recall, I believe you goofed and sent James Brydon instead which was great because I didn't have it at the time!  It's been a great one!

I received some different hardy varieties from Perry's Watergardens because I'm going to sell a few on Ebay.
Well of course, I have to keep one of each for myself!

Karen, I might be wrong.. I can hardly recall what happened yesterday, most likely 5 or so years ago!

I know that you meant to send Perry's Fire Opal but when it bloomed you realized that you got it mixed up.. I was thinking it was James Brydon that you sent instead?
HUMMMMMMMM.........
