2x12's doubling (modified 05/22)
« on: May 19, 2007, 07:11:14 AM »
If you wanted to use 2 2x12's to add on to an existing pond....what would be your best advice for placing the 2x12's atop each other?

Modified 05/22: We need to enlarge our pond see photo below. I wanted to go above ground 2 feet and leave the exisiting liner where it is.....add a new liner and go up so we will have the depth already dug as well. Any construction ideas that are simple and easy are welcomed. Second shot is what I had in mind but the price of lumber is awful so I want to make sure it would hold water before I invest that much moola.

Jen, I have a wooden construction basement pond for winter use, and also ponded in raised ponds before we dug our large one.  I am not sure I understand your question.  Can you try again and give a little more information?

sure. I want to add two feet above ground to my existing outdoor pond and we were looking at treated wood to give it that country look. Any ideas on how to put together something that will hold the water?

Jen, you are going to have to add "ribs" at least every 2'. I would suggest 16" centers on the "ribs." I will have to take a pic of the trough that's under construction so you can see what I did and it has 3/4" plywood on the sides. I'll post the pic tomorrow night.

Happy ponding,

Jen, I have a small raised pond (half under and half above ground), using wooden sleepers.  I dare not get into any technical talk, because I'm hopeless, but can provide some very basic photos of the construction... might give you some ideas or turn you off completely!

I'm still trying to remember to get the camera when I get home from work and take that pic. I may have to get the neighbor to move his car to get a good shot.

I finally did it. Here's the pics.

Notice in the last pic where the clamps are. The will be an overflow there. I still have to cut it out. This trough is 4w x 10l x 2d. The 2' depth is the water. The trough is actually 27" deep. This is the biggest one yet and very decorative.
