What Lily Should I Buy?
« on: May 28, 2007, 02:51:37 PM »
Help me decide.

Here's what I"m deciding between, from the Pond Megastore (which I found thanks to THIS site  O0  )

Chromatella

Lemon Mist

Texas Dawn

https://www.pondmegastore.com/shop/home.php?cat=249

My pond is small - 550 gallons.

My lilies are kept in a tub within that pond, about 18" x 34" - to protect them from the koi!

I want something:

yellow

with leaves small enough to fit in the tub, but large enough to contrast with the star-flower (I think that's the name)  That's the only other plant in this enclosure (except floating hornwart)  Only fantail goldfish live in this enclosure.

that will do well in dappled sun / mostly shade

hardy

will make it in Houston's hot humid conditions and long growing season

Thanks for your input!

I have a yellow lily that we think is a Texas Dawn...I got it from a lady in Houston.  It hasn't gotten to large for me.  I keep dividing it to share.  Here is a pic from last year.  It has been a very good bloomer.  It is my favorite.  I had it in a 20 gallon tub one summer and it kept right on blooming under the carport.

N. Joey Tomocik is by far the best yellow hardy waterlily. I would forget about the others and find a supplier that has N. Joey Tomocik in stock.
Here is a link to the list of Truly Named participating members where you can be assured you WILL receive the correct plant.

Sean knows his lily's so I'd go with his recommendations.

Julles,
I actually emailed them today concerning their listings. Many of the descriptions or pictures are wrong with what they say they are selling.  >:(-
Even my wife pointed out some discrepancies and her knowledge is casual.
If you order you may or may not get what you want.
I have N. Joey Tomocik and agree with Sean that it is the best and brightest yellow of the hardies.
Rolf can probably get you a N. Joey Tomocik if you want. Just call and ask to talk to Mike or Rolf out at Nelson's.

Definitely Joey for yellow. It's a very deep yellow and stays quite small and compact.

I'd go with Joey Tomocik, altho my favorite small yellow is Helvola.   However, if you have koi in the pond, they may
tear up Helvola in no time flat.

Thank you so much, everyone.  It looks like Joey T is it!

I HAD an Joey T. at one time   ... up until I decided to "do it right" and took it to the pond store to have it professionally repotted.  Well, somehow or other, their dirt clouded my pond and would NOT filter out, and I had to (for the second time that month) COMPLETELY break down my pond.  Not only that, but somehow or other, they KILLED my lily, and it never came back.  And - dang it ! - I had made them give me all the divisions (I think they try to keep them, to repot and sell) and I had already given all the divisions away, so I was SOL on my Joey T.

Thanks for the info, and I'll follow up and take everyone's advice on a Joey.

My preference is Yellow Comanche or Texas Dawn

Sue I'm sure that is not Texas Dawn.

Yes Gary, I was going to say Sue's pic looked way too yellow for N.Texas Dawn.
It should be a pale yellow with peach tones.

Julles, N. Joey Tomocik will do great here in Houston. Just feed it heavily. Our heat and humidity will probably allow you to have blooms until December.
