Amaryllis, Callas etc...
« on: May 29, 2007, 08:39:42 PM »
Here are some new flowers that are blooming for the first time for me...
The first three shots are all calla lilies.
I have bought them 4 different times and they always disintegrated from root rot.
Last year I planted some from bulbs and got 1 flower.
This year I was encouraged so I planted some more varieties.
So far the pink one from last year came back and the other 2 are part of this years plantings.

I ordered a set of 4 summer blooming amaryllis. They arrived a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately 1 had already bloomed in transit and subsequently wilted.
I planted all four in a big container to see what 3 would bloom.

Collection included 4 bulbs:
1 Papillio
1 Elvas
1 Exotic Star
1 Santa Cruz
So far the Exotic Star, the striped one and the Elvas, the double white have bloomed.

The one I really want to see is the Papillio. With my luck it is the one I am going to have to wait another year to see.

The last 2 shots are a little more exotic.

The first is called a climbing lily. It is a plant that is almost 6 feet tall.
When it opens, it is flat like a passiflora and it is green.
The second day it recurves and turns red.

The other picture is one of the Asiatic tango lilies.
I ordered a collection of assorted colors.
This one is the first to bloom. It is called Cappuccino.
Hopefully I will be able to post pics of the other colors in a few days.

I hope you all like them.
I also hope they are small enough that a lot of you can enjoy them.

Nice pics. I have a lily that looks a lot like your Tango and I love it - easy to grow, too.

This is my first year regrowing my callas from the tubers that I overwintered. I hope to see some blooms too.

Thanks SheilaJ.
Good luck with the callas. As I said above this is the 1st year in 3 years where I can say I have had any success.
The tango lilies come in red, orange, pale pink, yellow and the white you see above.
I really can't wait to see the red or orange as I prefer bold colors.

My wife actually wanted them and it has taken this long to get them to take. LOL

By the way I just took some shots of the Halloween Tango lily. Orange and Black.

I'll post them later this evening.

Time to work in the yard.

Well the reds haven't bloomed. It was actaully the landini lily... a very dark lily that bloomed.
However all of the rain turned the ground to mush. The weight of the lilies broke the stem at the ground.
I did get to take a shot with a boquet look of the Halloween lilies.

The climbing lily is kind of strange but it looks like it is going to be a winner.
The first bloom is still open 4 days later. Others continue to open.
Each day the lily continues to curve a bit more, the flower gets more red and the stamen get more pollen.
There are at least 5 more blooms on the plant.

I bought some dahlias this year for the first time.
I wasn't sure if they would do well in my area.
They are supposed to bloom late summer.
But since we are already in the mid 90s here I got my 1st bloom.
It's a beauty. I can't wait until the little bush is full.

Tim, that climbing lily is really interesting - different! Nice Dahlia too. I guess in your zone you don't have to lift them for the winter. That's what is keeping me from planting any.

Thanks for all the nice pics.

On the dahlias. I shouldn't have to. I have never tried them.
I have so many things that are spring and early summer bloomers so I was looking for something to extend the color season other than my water lilies.

As the lily continues to bloom, it gets redder each day and then it flattens back out like on the first day when it was green before it recurved.

Glad you liked the pics.

Tim, your calla lily photos are gorgeous. I really like callas but the New Zealand ones don't survive for me. I do have the South African white one though and it does very well.
I also like your climbing lily.

I love that climbing lily, I have to look for that.  You are in Florida right Tim?  So, it should do fine here in Calif and perhaps also down in the Yucatan where there is more humidity, supposedly no frost either place but it did freeze in Ca this last winter, never, ever gets below 45F in Merida, and that is a 100 yr cold streak.

SheilaJ, yes it's a beauty.

Jonna, I'm actually in Houston, TX. 20s and teens is low around here usually but 100 degrees and 100% humidity is normal in the summer.
I bought it along with a whole bunch of other stuff from
http://www.kvbwholesale.com/wholesale/lilies/index.html
I also bought a bunch of stuff last year and this year from
http://www.dutchgardens.com/

Both of them have both of those in early spring.

It should be fine in either place then, well, not here in the desert if it needs humidity but I can supply more of that by planting around the pond.

Here's a common joke among ex-pats in Merida.  Friends in the states always ask if Merida is as hot as they have heard.  We tell them yes, it is hotter than hell if hell equals Houston in the summertime.   ;)   In fact we are fairly close by air from Houston and the TX Gulf coast.  It's less than a 2 hour flight, straight across the Gulf.
