Samaras
« on: May 30, 2007, 01:58:21 AM »
The name for the little helicopters which appear on maples
I have never seen so many on my Japanese maples as this year
There is going to be a lot of seed propogation next year :)
I am even getting some on my lace leafs which I am anxious to try, as I have yet to grow a lace leaf from seed
These are on  Acer palmatum 'Suminagashi'

I learned a new word today! Thanks! We always called them whirligigs.

Samaras reminds me of samosas, the turnovers with veggies that are so yummy.

A samara is sometimes called a key and is often referred to as a helicopter or whirligig or a polynose.

I always thought they were polynoses and we walked around all summer with them sticking on the end of our noses. I miss those summers! o(:-)
