How do our members feel about advertising banners?
« on: September 01, 2006, 10:31:18 PM »
We never sought a profit when starting this site, and still don't.
A few advantages of having advertisers is we can get paid for same.  At least once we build the membership back up.  Why money?  well we do have a webmaster that deserves some bucks!  At the very least.
Most of us contribute posts because it is fun and an avocation we all love.
But there is another reason.  Advertisers can link us and thus attract more members.
More members is just like circulation for a magazine.  A big readership means greater desirability for the advertisers.
Can we go on as we are now?  Sure we can, but as the Toyota commercial says.
   " moving ahead. "
your input is welcome.

I have no problems with banners. On my fishing site the banners are on the side and between the posts.

Can I be so bold as to make a suggestion and set a trend that I think ALL of us would like to see?  If you do accept advertising tell them that you have two conditions:
1. No pop-up ads
2. No flashing banners

I honestly wish all people who accept ads would start following this, because if they did, then there would be no place for pop-ups and flashing ads except the porn sites (which I never visit)

ever

never ever.

I cant stand the things, I think they cheapen any site they are on. If having them is only an attempt to come up with money to pay me for my services, forget about it, I have said since day one that I neither require payment or wish to be paid for what I do here. It is my contribution. It may take me much more time each day for what I do with the site but that is my contribution which I give freely to the forum so all the members can enjoy this alternative forum to visit and share.

I have designed websites for well over 15 years now and have to say, adding advertisements makes the site look like it can not operate without the additional funding. That being said, I would be happy to pay the second year of hosting myself. It really is not that much money.

An added note, a web forum is not judged but how many members it has, but by the quality of the posts ;)

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,
Sean

If it's not that much then what about just throwing up a once a year request for donations?  A few people would be more than happy to do a payPal thing for a couple bucks.  Tell everyone the tab for the year and people can gauge what they could donate.

Then, no ads at all.

Hi Jerry, I have a friends birthday Party today and a Harbour cruise I am going to tomorrow but will call you Monday about the details to move to one of the new servers I have scouted out. It's here in Vancouver and being in Canadian funds, it will stretch your dollar.

The reason that I came to this forum is that there was no banner ads and it's free. :) If you ask for donations, I'm not sure about Canada but in the US, you have to pay taxes unless you register as a non-profit organization. If funds are needed, just do an auction.

The non-profit or not for profit thing is something that I'm trying to get info on right now so I can get my club set up for donations and plant sales.

I liked the links to the supporting pond supply companies. Whether this could be accomplished without banner ads is my question. I really don't mind the ads but whatever everybody else wants is fine by me. Also I would love to donate to this cause and don't see why Jerry/Sean couldn't come up with a way for us to do it. After all look at the services and information they are providing for us + many hours of entertainment and all for free. I don't think either Jerry or Sean need to be embarrassed to accept money from us if it is voluntary. It isn't like they are asking for it.

I would prefer no ads, especially flashing ones. I hate flashing stuff on websites, gives me headaches. I certainly don't mind links to relevant sites.

I urge everyone to buy a tee shirt! I've got two, one for me and one for DH :)

I recently bought a smoker and hot smoked a total of four racks of ribs this last weekend.  Two racks were spareribs with the St. Louis cut and I onlly put on a dry rub and refrigerated them overnight prior to putting into the smoker.  The next day I prepared baby backs and used a marinade over night in the fridge and then a dry rub prior to placing into the smoker.  The baby backs then had a sauce put on them during the last 30 minutes.  They were smoked and slow cooked, about 210 degrees, and they came out super. O0  The spareribs took 8 hours to cook and the baby backs four hours.  The two styles were completely different and I liked both.  I took both types of ribs to a party last night and the folks were in hog heaven @O@

Next I think I will try hot smoking some pork butt and make a pulled pork out of it.  Love pulled pork o(:-)
