Foxglove (Digitalis)
« on: June 05, 2007, 05:32:39 AM »
This grows like a weed in our garden, self seeding everywhere
Many have to be pulled out of unwelcome spots every year
Having said that ...  this is one pretty 'weed' :)

Your lucky, I bought one last year and it died.  Looks beautiful though

I bought a Foxglove about a month ago.  Do you deadhead it?  Or leave them on so it will reseed?

It surprises me what ya'll are saying....I keep hearing Foxglove is hard to keep alive...and some consider an annual.

Over here we pull them out where they are not wanted, leave them alone where they are, and allow them to go to seed and then cut them down to keep the place tidy

I read that the yellow one - Digitalis grandiflora - is a longer-lived perennial (maybe 4 to 5 years) compared to the biennial types. I have tried 3 of them in different conditions in my yard and all 3 are thriving in their third year with no special care, other than watering during dry spells.

We had a beautiful white one three years ago but it has disappeared.  I think they are inclined to cross pollinate and lose colour anyways :)
Maybe it just felt out of place with all the pinks ......

I let them go to seed.

I have a lot of white ones this year. They do cross pollinate, I've never planted a white one.

Kills me to know they grow like weeds for some of you.  Me?  I pay enough to watch it die  :'(
Snails love it too.
Lucky you.

Annette, you can grow many wonderful things in SoCA!

Hibiscus, Gardenias, Bougainvillea, Birds of Paradise both Mexican and tropical, palms, bananas, ficus the list goes on and on.

Mikey has tons of cottage garden plants growing successfully, many that you wouldn't think would. You need to hook up with him if you want English/cottage perennials. There are some that are tall and spiky like Foxgloves. Don't despair.

LeeAnne, Too much sun in my garden which would require too much water ($$$  {nono}).  In my experience foxgloves prefer shade during the hottest time of the day and some moisture in nice soil.  My garden = Easy on H2O + Clayish soil
