I don't have any growing right now but I've got seed for it and that is Irish moss.

My favorite is hosta and ferns.

Hostas!

But there are lots of other cool companions, too...

Dicentra...I especially love 'Gold Heart' and the little ever blooming fern leaf bleeding hearts.

Arisaema

Epimedium

Brunnera...the silver foliage types are great.

Cimicifuga

Tricyrtus...lots of great variegated cultivars

Martagon lilies

Primula kisoana

Polygonatum

Polygonum...Stairway to Heaven is a good variegated one.

Podophyllum...the Asian species & new hybrids are nice.

Helleborus

Heucheras & Tiarellas

Trillium

That will give you a start  :)

I like them all! The older I get, the more I appreciate the quiet subtlety of shade gardens.

I don't see shade as a problem. I love shade gardens. I am glad my trees have matured enough to let me grow more shade plants. There are soooooo many. You can have dozens of different ferns, hostas, heucheras, Rhodies etc. and I do. LOL  ;D

well, I don't have that many hostas, I've been killing them. I finally read the answer on GW's hosta forum, duh, I was planting too deep and then mulching. I think this is the answer anyway. I'm going to dig the struggling ones up and replant higher and see what happens. If it works, whoooo hoooo, I'm on a hosta kick. I've always loved them. I've been planting them in pots but my garden needs those big leaves.

I've tried most of those listed.  What is good for "hot" "dry" shade?
